10 things you should know about the late Bukky Ajayi

After a glorious time on earth, using her talents to bless the silver screen, Nollywood actress Bukky Ajayi has gone into eternal rest.

The 82-year-old’s stellar acting career was crowned in March when she was named the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement award at the 2016 AMVCA.

Her emotional acceptance speech at the awards got a well-deserved standing ovation from the audience and set social media abuzz at the end of the speech.

Here are 10 things you should know about the late Bukky Ajayi;

1. Born on February 2, 1934 into a Christian family, Bukky later changed to Islam in the early eighties and took the name Zainab.

2. She had always loved theater right from when she was a little girl especially as her father used to take her to the cinemas.

3. Bukky Ajayi went to England on a Federal scholarship to study drama at the Institute of Drama in London. She stayed in the UK for 6 years.

4. She got back to Nigeria after her education in 1965 and got a job at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) as a presentation assistant in 1966.

5. While at NTA she rose to become a presenter and then a news reader. Her presenting gigs included the popular Nigerian’s Sketches, a programme aimed at celebrating the Nigerian culture.

6. On her return to Lagos from Port Harcourt where she was transferred by NTA, Bukky Ajayi delved into acting career. Her first shot at acting was the popular soap opera – the Village Headmaster in the 70s. She then followed it up with another role in Amaka Igwe’s Checkmate which had the likes of RMD and more.

7. Bukky Ajayi acted in both English and Yoruba movies and TV series. Her remarkable acting career which spans over 3 decades includes major roles in Diamond Ring, Fuji house of commotion, Iya Bournvita and more.

8. A major highlight of her acting career was when she featured in the international film Critical Assignment shot in South Africa.

9. She is a mother-in-law to Nigerian rapper, Jazzman Olofin.

10. While she is a mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Bukky Ajayi has a son named Olakunle Fawole aka Abounce who is also an actor and a rapper. He has featured in films like Diamond Ring, Apostle Kasali, Cash Money among others.
