A young girl in Bayelsa has lost her life after being stabbed by a hawker on the streets of Yenagoa, the state capital.

The 11-year-old victim, identified simply as Comfort, was said to have gotten involved in an argument with the 18-year-old orange seller which resulted in the latter attacking her with a knife.

Comfort, an indigene of the Ovom community within the state, subsequently died of her extensive injuries.

Leadership reports:

Spokesman of the state police command, Mr. Alex Akhigbe has confirmed the development.

According to eyewitness accounts, the victim identified as Comfort had earlier last Wednesday disrespected the orange seller by allegedly using vulgar and disrespectful language against her intention to send her on an errand.

“On Thursday, the deceased girl was also reported to have come across the orange seller while displaying her oranges and stood before the wares. Attempts by the orange seller to ward-off the kid resulted in another altercation and alleged insults on her parents,” the witness narrated.

LEADERSHIP gathered that the threats by the orange seller that she would stab the 11-year-old girl if she fails to move away from her point of sales were met with another tirade and she eventually stabbed her in the stomach and she died.

The residents on discovering the incident were said to have called in the patrol team of the police area command who took the corpse of the deceased kid away and arrested the orange seller.

Commenting on the development, the Chairman of the state chapter of the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), Chief Nengi James condemned the act and describing it as a reflection of the deteriorating values in the society and urged the the state government and the state House of Assembly to act quickly and pass into law the Child Rights Bill, saying, “if such a Bill is passed into law, parents will learn to ensure that their kids are in school and such incidence of violence against the Nigerian child will reduce.”
