N17,000 for Nigerian IDPs to start afresh

The World Food Programme – set up by the United Nations to address hunger – is giving N17,000 to over 500,000 families displaced by the senseless attacks of terrorist sect, Boko Haram.

The Chairman of Borno State Emergency Agency, Ahmed Satomi revealed on Sunday, May 8 that over 35,000 families had already benefited from the scheme.

“We are targeting the most vulnerable couples, widows and those who have passed through great hardship as a result of the insurgency.”

“Apart from our IDPs in the 28 camps, we also have about a million of them taking refuge in host communities of Jere and Maiduguri Metropolitan Council.”

Satomi revealed the government’s plan to distribute food in IDPs in their host communities even as some of the people displaced by Boko Haram have returned to their homes in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe.

So what: Even though N17,000 can only do so much, it will at least help the IDPs get back on their feet and give them some semblance of hope.
