2 Wazobia FM presenters charged for inciting the attacks on immunisation workers in Kano

Three people who allegedly said on air that polio immunization was an anti-Islam western conspiracy to cause infertility in Northern women two days before the nine female workers administering the polio immunization vaccines were killed were granted bail on Thursday.

Judge, Justice Ibrahim Bello presiding over the case from Kano Magistrate Court 7 said after his observation of several provision of the constitution which gave automatic bail to an offence that does not exceed three year jail term he granted the accuse a bail with payment of N100, 000 each and two sureties to include a community leader and a head of department of which the accuse work.

Yakubu Musa Fage and Mubarak Muhammed, staff of Wazobia FM in Kano and Abubakar Rabo the former director-general of the Kano state Censorship Board were arrested for allegedly stirring Islamists who in separate attacks killed the nine health workers in Angwar Uku and Hotoro on Friday. The inciting statement was allegedly made on Hausa Programme Sandar Girma.

The Kano Police commissioner, Ibrahim Idris, referred to their action on air as “grossly irresponsible” journalism.

The case was adjourned till the March 13, 2013. They were charged in court on a seven count charge which involved criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbances, intentional insult among others.
