Reports from Premium Times indicate that about twenty one Independent National Electoral Commission Residential Electoral Commissioners (RECs) have expressed their opposition to alleged plans by the Commission to postpone the February 14 elections for a few weeks.

With 37 RECs covering Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja – this number represents 57 per cent of the members.

Media reports have indicated that the Commission, under pressure from varying quarters, including 17 political parties out of the total 28, may have decided to postpone the election by six weeks. This is to ensure adequate security for the proper conduct of the exercise.

The opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) have rejected any plan to postpone the election saying such calls are sponsored by President Goodluck Jonathan and the ruling party to stave their imminent defeat at the polls.

Prof. Attahiru Jega, the Commission’s chairman is being expected to make the INEC decision public at a press conference scheduled to hold anytime soon.

We shall keep you posted on this rapidly developing story.
