3 reasons why the English FA’s verdict on Papiss Cisse and Jonny Evans is daft

by Mark Bassey

The verdict for the Jonny Evans/Papiss Cisse spitting incident is in. And once again, we sit back and laugh at the FA’s folly.

“Newcastle United’s Papiss Cisse and Manchester United’s Jonny Evans will serve suspensions of seven-matches and six-matches respectively with immediate effect,” read a statement on the FA’s website.

Too many things wrong here.

1. Nobody’s leg was broken. As much as spitting should not be encouraged in football, little reactions like these can happen during a game. So far no bodily harm was carried out, this punishment is like using a sledge hammer on an ant.

2. Video footage from the game, clearly showed that both players spat at each other. Cisse owned up, but Evans denied. One would have expected the FA to be lenient on the Senegalese. But then he gets more punishment.

3. It is quite shocking how this spitting row, has become more important that Chelsea’s Diego Costa shoving Cresswell to the floor on the same day. Don’t get me started on the FA reducing Nemanja Matic’s ban, after Jose Mourinho whined himself to sleep!
