3 Things we learnt from last weekend’s Premiership games

by ‘Ifreke Inyang

The London derby between Arsenal and Chelsea, kicked off another sumptuous weekend of EPL games. There were no major upsets – except maybe Spurs’ victory over United on their home patch. But here are three things that stood out for us:

1. Giroud is not Chamakh in disguise

It is rather unfair that Olivier Giroud, has drawn comparisons with the Moroccan striker. His last minute miss against Chelsea on Saturday, was yet another in a growing catalogue of missed sitters. But let’s not forget two things. First, the former Montpellier man is new to the English league and is still adapting to its pace and intensity. And secondly, his movement and determination to get stuck in matches, puts him a notch above Chamakh. He looks like the type of player, who will not stop scoring as soon as the confidence begins to flow.

2. The Manchester teams are still flattering to deceive

The Manchester teams – who finished apart, only on goals difference last season – are yet to get into their strides this campaign. It took a desperate substitution and virtually the last kick of the game, for City to grab a 3-2 victory over a resilient Fulham side. Back in Manchester, their rivals went down by a similar margin to Tottenham Hotspurs – their first win at Old Trafford in 23 years. Apart from injuries, United were distinctly off colour, till the second half introduction of Wayne Rooney, who tried to spark a comeback

3. Referees are a tad unfair to foreign players

Well, the argument is that the foreign players, introduced diving into the English game. But with Ashley Young in particular, grabbing the headlines all through last season for the offence, we know better. Last weekend, City’s pair – Carlos Tevez and Pablo Zabaleta and Liverpool’s Luis Suarez, were all denied possible penalties. And this led to Sergio Aguero insisting that the referees were biased towards the foreigners. “Yes. Always,” he said. “But it happens everywhere [in the world]. There is a little bit of privilege with players who come from that country. That is normal. We just play our game, and the referee’s job is to know who is tricking him and who is not.” Well, we think he has a point.
