The National Orientation Agency (NOA) is another government body set up to sensitize citizens, communicate government policies and promote patriotism.
It only seems yesterday morning that the body has gone too far with its task. Nigerians have taken to Twitter to condemn the latest move of the NOA to reinstate the War Against Indiscipline brigade which was one of the fundamental evils of President Buhari’s regime as a military leader back in ’84.
Here are 6 reasons why we think the NOA needs to go:
- Nigerians who were adult enough when WAI existed in the 80s recall the trauma that the brigade brought upon ordinary citizens. It’s been 22 years and nobody needs to suffer like that in a democratic state.
2. The NOA says that the concept of WAI is to “instil discipline and orderliness in our society both in private and public life”. Does this mean WAI brigadiers will flog me if I don’t wash plate at home? Do we have to have a bath before we go to the market now? Or what kind of discipline are we talking about? Someone please explain to me.
3. The reintroduction of WAI in our society would have been applauded if their jurisdiction was restricted to the National Assembly. We all know our lawmakers are the most disorderly and undisciplined lots the country can boast of.
Maybe Senator Dino Melaye will refrain from threatening fellow senators when WAI is sitting behind him and watching his every move.
4. What purpose will the Civil Defence Commission serve when WAI brigade returns? How many more agencies does the government need to set up to curb the excesses of its citizens when it is yet to take out the plank in its own eye? Taxpayers’ money will yet again be used to fund another seemingly useless body. You people should continue.
5. The NOA’s slogan is Do The Right Thing: Transform Nigeria. At this time of economic instability and loud groaning from the public, reintroducing WAI is nowhere near the right thing and will do nothing to transform the current deplorable state of the nation.
6. WAI do we need WAI? The NOA should provide plausible answers or go.
