5 famous Hollywood actors you won’t believe have never won an Oscar

The 88th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to honour the best Hollywood films of 2015 would take place tonight at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California.

Comic/actor, Chris Rock will host the awards for the second time, having previously hosted the 77th edition in 2005.

While you look forward to the winners who would be celebrated tonight, YNaija has compiled a list of 5 top Hollywood stars who have, surprisingly, failed to win an Oscar throughout the course of their career.

1. Will Smith

Many would find it surprising that the ‘most powerful actor in Hollywood’ as described by Newsweek in 2007, whose big break came from the family television series, Fresh Prince of Bel Air, is yet to get rewarded by the Academy for his acting prowess.

Many expected Will to take an Oscar plaque home in 2002 after being nominated for his portrayal of great boxing heavyweight, Muhammad Ali in the American biographical drama- Ali- but he lost to Denzel Washington.

His hopes were however, dashed again in 2007 when he was nominated for his ‘heartfelt performance’ as described by Rotten Tomatoes in Pursuit of Happyness- but again, he lost to another African-American actor, Forest Whitaker, who starred in Last King of Scotland.

2. Samuel L. Jackson

For one who has given over 4 decades to Hollywood, one would wonder how the second highest all-time box office star- with over $4.635.5 billion total box office gross, an average of $68.2 million per film- has not won a single award at the Oscars.

Worse still, Samuel L. Jackson has only been nominated once which was back in 1994 as best supporting actor for his 30th film -Pulp fiction. He however, lost to Martin Landrau who claimed the award for his role in Ed Wood.

His fans had over the years, expected that he would earn a nomination for his critically acclaimed roles in films like Jungle Fever, A Time to Kill, Coach carter amongst others.

Unfortunately, Jackson is still waiting for that first Oscar win.

3. Leomardo DiCarprio

We know right? How is it even possible?

Though everyone is rooting for him to win tonight but even Leo might not be super-excited as he is no stranger to disappointments at the Oscars.

Leonardo DiCaprio
is definitely one of the most respected and loved actors in Hollywood- but he has never won an Oscar and guess what?- the Catch Me If You Can star has been nominated 4 times before his Revenant nomination at this year’s Oscars.

Hopefully, he is 5th time lucky tonight.

4. Johnny Depp

Yes, it is true. 2012’s Guinness World Records highest paid actor has not clinched an Oscar awards.

Sad right? Very very sad.

Although, he was nominated for his role in 2003 American fantasy film –Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl- he lost out to Senn Penn, for his role in Mystic River.

In 2014, he earned another nomination for Finding Neverland but lost to Jamie Foxx, who gave a remarkable performance in autobiographical- Ray.

5. Harrison Ford

With over six decades in film, it is very perplexing how Harrison Ford has not gotten a nod from the Academy.

The Indiana Jones star has appeared in five of the thirty highest-grossing movies of the U.S. box office, the most for any actress/actor.

Even with this feat, it must be extremely disheartening for Mr Ford that he’s only been nominated for the award once- which was for his role in the 1985 thriller –Witness.
