5 reasons why your church was scanty today

by Mark Bassey

Driving around this morning in Lagos and probably other states, you would have thought it was a public holiday. The roads were deserted, with only few vehicles in sight. So what happened to we the God-loving Nigerian lot?

1. Members were asked not to come

After INEC announced that the elections will be extended until today, some churches actually sent a text message or email to their members and instructed them to stay at home. Part of the confusion was if there would be movement today today, as INEC’s statement was so detailed.
2. Some were afraid of the arrow that flieth by day

Let’s not deny it. After some tweeters started posting some ‘results’ online, the tension began to grow and some worshippers chose to sit at home, as they expected some form of violent reaction on the streets. Well, so far, there has not been anything like that.
3. Others went to vote

The whole point of the extension of the elections, was to enable those who had issues with accredition/voting resolve them today. Judging from the massive turn out on Saturday, it will not shock us to know, that some Christians actually stayed back to be part of the exercise.
4. Tired bodies

A lot of people voted late into the night – and we are talking about 2am and even later. There was no way they could have woken up on time revitalized and ready to go jump in joyful praise in church. So they just cuddled up in bed and enjoyed the very long weekend.
5. Money to be made

Of course! Many voters (and non-voters) were bored stiff sitting at home all day on Saturday and they could not wait for Sunday to come. Some zoomed off to their offices or business premises and tried to make up for the lost day.
