6 things we learned from Buhari’s presidential inauguration

by Wilfred Okichie

1. There is a change of guard and it’s real.

In politics, it is mostly a case of winner takes all and president Jonathan wasn’t the only man going leaving Abuja powerless. The crux of the presidency’s men, the most powerful people who surrounded the president and make things work for him have been replaced. Gone are the Reuben Abatis, Doyin Okupes and Adamu Muazus. In are the John Oyeguns, the Shehu Garbas and the Adebola Williams. Yes we said it.

2. Politicians are the new rock stars

In these parts, it is easy to see why. The stretch limos, the exotic mansions, the groupies and hangers on, they’ve got it covered. Plus they pay their own musicians. The thunderous reception granted to these A-list politicians as they thronged the Eagle Square was a wonder to behold. Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, South African leader Jacob Zuma, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu seemed to inspire the most cheers and followers.

3. All the love for Buhari
From the streets of Abuja to the open bowl of the inauguration venue, one name was on everybody’s lips. And that name was Buhari. The cult follower ship that Mr President commands is second to none, the expectations on his presidency, enormous. His mandate is simply one that cannot afford to fail.

4. APC where are the women?
Sure there is Abike Dabiri-Erewa smoothening out tangled knots and there are the significant others of the mostly male cast. But compared to the sheer populations of men in strategic positions within the party structure, the women seem to be getting the shorter end of the stick.

5. Kwam 1 is in a class of his own.
Whether he was spewing party loyalty fare or impressing the importance of Change, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshall took hold of the live band and rocked it like no other performer at the event.

6. The Armed forces know how to put on a show
Anyone who left the day’s proceedings with feeling a stir for the stellar performance of the troops need s to have a solid rethink.

  1. Corruption in Leadership and Service
Will President Buhari continue with the governance approach that keeps Nigeria a rich country full of poor people; where to be powerful or on the inside track is too often seen as being licensed to participate in the industrial-scale pilfering of public resources.…or hire and manage players willing and able to make governance about the people; their needs and aspirations….go….lightnigeria.wordpress.com
