Even though this may be a bit hard to believe since this is a very delicate topic, there are quite a lot of things to say to someone who is depressed. When you are trying to help a loved one who suffers from depression, you might say a lot of things that are quite inappropriate and might even offend them.

Depression is isolating and it takes away all your hope for a better and brighter future. If you really want to help your loved one, then just pay a little attention to these next important things to say to someone who is depressed:

1. “IS THERE SOMETHING I CAN DO FOR YOU?”

In my opinion, this is one of the most helpful things to say to someone who is depressed. Instead of just suggesting them all kinds of alternatives, simply ask them if there is something that you can actually do for them. They will really appreciate your gesture and they will know that they can really count on you when they need it.

2. “WHAT TIME OF DAY IS HARDEST FOR YOU?”

This is another important thing you should say to someone who suffers from depression. By knowing when their depression gets worse, you can do something during those times of day to help them improve their mood. For example, you can call them and just talk to them about anything they want or you could surprise them and do something fun together.

3. “I’M HERE FOR YOU.”

This is one of the most helpful things you can say to someone who suffers from a mood disorder. It’s simple, sweet and very effective. They will know that you care a lot about them and that they can find in you the support they need to overcome this difficult time in their life. You can always add “I love you” or “I would do anything for you,” and you will surely help them feel a little bit better.

4. “YOU DON’T WALK THIS PATH ALONE.”

This point is very similar with the previous one but I had to mention it, since these simple words are very effective. Just remind them every once in a while that they are not alone, that you are willing to do everything you can to see them smile again and that you will offer them all the support they need to feel better.

5. “I BELIEVE IN YOU!”

People who suffer from depression often lose their hope and their desire to live a happy and meaningful life. They’ve also lost all belief in themselves, in their own abilities and they often feel that they just can’t do anything right. Just remind them that you believe in them, that you know how talented and resourceful they are and that you know that they will find the strength to overcome this difficult time in their life.

6. “THINGS WILL GET BETTER.”

Another very useful thing you could say to someone who is depressed is that even though they might find it hard to see it right now and even if some things might seem a little difficult, all of that is only temporary and things will get better. By telling them this, you will remind them that “emotions and moods are not permanent, even if they feel like they are.”

7. NOTHING

Sometimes saying nothing is the best choice you can make when you’re dealing with a depressed loved one. Just listen to what they have to say, give them your undivided attention, and be there for them when they are crying. Show them you really care about them and that you are willing to do anything just to help them feel better.
