7 things you didn’t read yesterday (but should have)

by Kolapo Olapoju

1. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Nigerians are advised to expect hardship in 2015. Founder of the Christ Royal Family Church, Bishop Tom Samson, has urged Nigerians to expect some tough times in the first half of next year. Speaking on behalf of the good Lord, he said: “The Lord has spoken to us that in 2015, it would be a year of glory. But there will be a bit of hardship and difficulty but before the middle of the year, glory will visit the country.”

2. If in this age and time, 36.9 million adult Nigerians still don’t have bank accounts, it either means they still don’t trust the banks enough to safe-keep their money, or they simply have no money worthy of safe-keeping. While you wonder which of the two may be the case, a survey: ‘Enhancing Financial Innovation and Access’ has shown that 36.9 million adults (39.5 per cent of the country’s population) don’t make use of banks.

3. Kano state governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso is besides himself with joy. He never expected it, neither did we; that he would come second behind Buhari, and ahead of Atiku Abubakar, who came third in the APC’s presidential primary. He is also telling us what we already know: that he got into the race to increase his nationwide popularity and bolster his political reputation.

4. Over time, Nigerian politics has proven that a man’s fortunes could completely change in a few weeks. Not too long ago, Musiliu Obanikoro was accused of being an opressor when he led the Nigerian army to Ekiti for the governorship election. Suddenly, the same man has become a victim, as he’s dragged his party, PDP to court over the governorship primaries in Lagos state. He’s particularly unhappy with the duo of Bode George and Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe, whom he claims used religion to advance the candidature of Mr. Jimi Agbaje, who won the primary.

5.  Dr. AbdulJhalil Tafawa Balewa wants the world to believe two things: that he did not join the race for Peoples Democratic Party presidential aspirant because of a yearn for fame, and secondly, that he was not forced to step down for President Goodluck Jonathan’s candidature. You don’t even have to believe his words, only try and enjoy the story. By the way, he is the son of Nigeria’s First Republic Prime Minister, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa.

6.  Arsene Wenger has told the entirety of unhappy Arsenal fans to support the team, as if they’ve not been doing enough of that for several years. Despite his unimpressive performance in the trophy department, Mr Wenger still deems the level of supporter-ship by fans of the North London club, unsatisfactory. He said: “What is in the word supporter? Support. It says what it says.”

7. Somebody is really pissed that APC presidential aspirant, Muhammadu Buhari had the audacity to declare his meagre N1 million naira asset. MC Abbey must be one of the millions of Nigerians who got carried away by the “no shoes” campaign point of President Jonathan, as he sought to equate it with Buhari’s account declaration. He also said: “You have at least one million in your account and so what, are you trying to say that people that have much more got it through corrupt practices?”, a statement which pretty much, tells us the reason for his grudge against Buhari.
