80-year-old faces time for N50 million fraud

An 80-year-old man, Jimoh Oni and three others have been charged before a Senior Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ota, for collecting N50 million under false pretences.

Oni was arraigned on Monday, 20 October, alongside three others, 48-year-old Akeem Badmus, 45-year-old Fausat Popolola, and 27-year-old Morufat Babalola.

The quartet are facing charges of obtaining money under false pretences, conspiracy, stealing and fraud, but they would however, pleaded not guilty.

According to the police prosecutor, Corporal Mustapha Abdulkareem, the accused and others at large committed the offences at about 12:30 p.m. on 9 September at Abule-Ishale Suberu Ilogbo, in Ota.

Abdulkareem said the accused and others at large collected N50 million from one Mr Olumide Ganiu with the intention of supplying bags of rice to him, but they failed to do so.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.O. Abimbola, granted each of the accused N500,000 bail with two sureties each in like sum.

She ruled that the sureties should be owners of developed landed property within the court’s jurisdiction and should submit title documents of their property for verification. She aso added that the sureties must show evidence that their annual income is more than N50 million and submit their passport photographs to the court as part of the bail conditions.

Abimbola adjourned the case till 25 November for hearing.
