Here’s why you haven’t heard new music from 9ice

by Chinwe Okafor

There always has to be an excuse for whatever 9ice does. When he dumped Toni Payne, he had an excuse, when she said she dumped him instead, he had an excuse, when he had other kids out of wedlock, he had an excuse, when he feel for another lady who isnt either mother of his kids, he had an excuse, when that one had a baby, he had an excuse, when he ventured into politics, he had an excuse, even for when he lost.

Now he has an excuse for why you haven’t heard from him in a while. To be fair, his reason is rather obvious.

If you have listened to 9ice sing recently, his hoarse voice is hard to ignore. His voice has drastically changed over the years and the now Special Adviser to the Oyo State governor on Youths [a compensation for his effort] ,blames it on a couple of things [another excuse] to Vanguard saying, “As at the time I recorded my first album, I was 24 years old, and if you compare that to when someone is 35 years old, you can see the changes in the physical body and every other aspect. Age has a lot to do with that. Another factor is that most times when we go for concerts, the microphones and other sound equipment are not right.

I end up shouting at the top of my voice. Imagine someone doing that consistently for five years [we really can imagine what artiste really go through]. After the release of ‘Gongo Aso’ I was doing shows all over back and forth for almost five years. Sometimes, you rehearse your songs on a particular key, and when you get there for performance, they play a different key. So with all these, there is the tendency to lose your voice, and even get the voice cracking.”

We would just imagine nothing else can cause such thing to happen except the fact that the entire scope and what comes with his career is his excuse.
