A first-of its-kind initiative: Youth-Marketer Converge 2011 (YMC 1.0)

by Hauwa Gambo

In a world that is continually ‘shrinking’, thanks to breakneck-speed innovation in science and technology, methods of reaching one’s target market are ever changing. Over the past few years, new media has greatly eroded the impact of traditional media, changing the way marketing and networking are done. Consequently any organization, especially one that has youth as its target market, needs to be adequately informed and equipped on how to navigate the waters of 21st century marketing.

The Youth-Marketer Converge aims to be the spring-board for establishing a first-rate youth marketing industry in Nigeria. The initiative presents a first-of-its-kind platform to bring together professionals from different disciplines who work with the youth demography to discuss the youth – an important segment of the African Consumer market. The initiative will hold an international marketing conference, Youth-Marketer Converge 2011 (YMC 1.0), scheduled to take place at the New Expo Convention Centre, Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria on March 17th & 18th, 2011.

“It is an annual conference which will provide a platform to discuss and educate professionals on emerging trends with regard to brands, and marketing to young people in Africa, taking cognisance of the broad framework of the UNDP’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs),” says CEO of F.B. Initiatives and Innovations, Ms. Funke Babatola.

The conference, which is themed ‘YOUTH: UNDERSTAND THEM, TO REACH THEM’ will feature speakers such as Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, Dom Sagallo (a co-creator of Twitter), Sam Graham-Felsen (Blog director of the New Media committee for Obama’s online presidential campaign), Funke Lekan-Salami (Country Manager AC Nielsen Ghana), Osayi Alile Oruene (Executive Director Fate Foundation), Bola Akingbade (Chief Marketing Officer, MTN), Toyorcey Akerele (CEO Rise Networks) and others. These speakers will cover such informative topics as The Lure Of Digital Media, Understanding Segments: Kids, Adolescents, Teens, Young Adults, Getting Content Right, Ethics and Cause Marketing and Case Studies/Experience Sharing.

Preceding the conference, there will be a Youth Expo and mini concert tagged “Meet Your Target Audience” as well as a networking dinner for select top corporates.
