A moment of silence for Osun State’s education system

Words by Simon Utsu

My good friends, the moment we have all been praying against is finally here. Can we please observe a moment of silence for education in Osun state? Aregbesola’s Osun finally made the cut in the list of exam fees defaulting states released by WAEC yesterday, hence the results of all the students in state government secondary schools have been withheld! Its official, Osun state is now on life support; academically, economically and otherwise.

Osun people are paying the price of Aregbe’s administrative recklessness and their own political shortsightedness. Didn’t we tell you not to vote him two years ago? You told us to mind our business as it was not our state but now we can’t! We are human beings too and so we feel your pains so we must cry out with you too.

Osun is a state that had for decades been up there academically till Ogbeni Aregbesola took over. Osun is home to Nigeria’s premium university, OAU. As at 1984, the popular Fani-Kayode clan had produced their third generation Cambridge graduates in Femi and his elder brother (their father and grandfather were also alumni). This was a first in Nigeria and they’re Osunites. Even the world revered General overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye who is one of the youngest ever PhD holders in Mathematics from a Nigerian University is from Osun.

Why then is Ogbeni Aregbesola trying to drag all these enviable achievements through the mud by creating an academic vacuum in the state? Teachers not being paid as at when due; owed for months and now secondary school students having their May-June WAEC results withheld due to Aregbe’s incompetence! This is what happens when a retired refrigerator technician who probably used his standard six result to get his first apprenticeship and hence doesn’t understand the value of an O-level is elected to govern a prestigious state like Osun.

I beg every well-meaning Nigerian to rally round the good people of Osun until Aregbesola’s head starts working well or he is booted out of office. The stench of administrative incompetence oozing out from Osun state is too putrid for us to keep pretending all is well.
