The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has called on stakeholders to respect the decision to postpone the general elections.

ECOWAS said the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC’s) move must be accepted it in good faith.

In a statement issued in Abuja, ECOWAS noted the decision by INEC to postpone the Presidential and National Legislative elections scheduled to hold on February 14 to March 28, and the Gubernatorial and State Legislative elections from 28 February to April 11, is as a result of the security challenges in the country.

“While noting the concerns and disappointment of Nigerians and all other stakeholders occasioned by this postponement, ECOWAS calls on all political actors to respect the decision by INEC and accept it in good faith,” the statement said.

ECOWAS called on the Nigerian security services to remain dedicated towards restoring normalcy in the North East of the country.

ECOWAS encourages INEC to take advantage of the postponement to complete all pre-election arrangements, particularly the distribution of Permanent Voters Cards (PVC) in order to ensure free and credible election, the statement read.

The body emphasized its continued support for the electioneering process in Nigeria and underscored the need for the respect of the Constitution.

It also seized the opportunity to encourage all political stakeholders to refrain from any utterances and speeches that might incite their supporters or opponents to violence. “All Nigerians must abide by the democratic process and uphold the rule of law,” it said.
