Aisha Buhari may have opted for the ‘Wife of the President’ but Punch reports that she still enjoys everything and carries out the role of the First Lady of Nigeria.
Mrs Buhari, is reportedly operating from the Office of the First Lady in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, in spite of her husband’s statement during the presidential campaign that; “The Office of the First Lady is not in the constitution, so there’s no official role for them.”
President Buhari, had during the campaign period, pledged that his administration would not encourage an office for the First Lady, provided he wins the election.
However, since his victory at the polls, it is believed that Aisha Buhari, apart from dropping the conventional title of ‘First Lady’, has enjoyed the perks and assumed the responsibilities of the office of the first lady.
The office where she operates from is the same one Patience Jonathan used for 6 years, and it is located beside the official residence of the President.
Like other wives of Presidents, the office is home to her staff members, including personal aides, security details and protocol officials, among others.
Aisha Buhari, like other first ladies, would also be initiating a pet project, in the near future.
Director of Media in the Office of the Wife of the President, Zakari Yau Nadabo, confirmed to Punch, that a pet project was being facilitated for Mrs Buhari.
He was quoted to have said: “It is not about initiating a pet project alone. The first step is to identify the area. The plan is already in the pipeline. Issues are just beginning to take shape. We do not want to rush. We want to take our time to do a careful analysis so that we can intervene in critical areas.”
