No @Amnesty, military not guilty of any human right abuses – NHRC

by Laila Ibrahim

Contrary to indictments made by Amnesty International about the Nigerian military abusing human rights in the fight against insurgency, the National Human Rights Commission  (NHRC) in Nigeria has exonerated the military of human abuses.

After critical investigation of the evidence provided by the Amnesty International, the commission stated on Wednesday that the report wasn’t in any way indicting.

The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Professor Bem Angwe, called on the international community to do more than pay lip services to the fight against terrorism in Nigeria.

“We believe that the international community do have a role to play here because most of the ammunitions and devices being used by the insurgent groups are manufactured by multinational companies in the international community.

“We believe that a good starting point will be a clear regulation of the proliferation of light weapons, small arms and such devices being used by members of the insurgent groups.

He emphasised that why Nigerians on daily basis cry from the activities of the insurgents groups, multinational companies go to the banks smiling from the profit made from the arms exported to Nigeria.

Also addressing the issue, a representative of the office of the High Commission for Human Rights in West Africa, Andrea Ori, pledged support to Nigeria, stating that the commission has an obligation to support the country.

“We are here to work with you, to support you. We know that the challenges are very high. But we really sympathise and empathise with you. We really encourage you to do the nice job that you are already doing.”
