183 people accused of forging observer accreditation materials and possession of arms have been arraigned before in Magistrate Court 2, Owerri, Imo State.
The suspects were arrested on the eve of the November 20, 2013 elections which saw APGA’s candidate Willie Obiano garnering majority votes. The elections have, however, been declared inconclusive.
According to a statement released by Kayode Idowu, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, the suspects “were arraigned for prosecution by the Independent National Rlectoral Commisiion (INEC) whose observer accreditation materials they weere accused of having forged, following the submission of the investigation report by Investigating Police Officer (IPO) Okoi Omini.”
He continied saying, “The lawyer from the office of the Imo State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) C. N Akobundu, showed up in court and requested to take over the prosecution; arguing that the offences the suspects are being accused of, namely, forgery and possession of arms, are criminal in nature.”
The case has, however, been adjourned till February 5, 2014.
