A gang of armed robbers attacked the Murtala Muhammed Airport on Wednesday night in an attempt to rob a bureau de change operator.

The robbers were said to have gained access into the airport through the terminal zero and proceeded straight into the arrival and departure halls of the terminal. Travellers were immediately ordered by the robbers to lie face down with those who refused to comply getting shot.

An Addax Oil protocol officer simply identified as Chike was caught in the hail of bullets and was later rushed to the hospital after the smoke had settled.

While speaking on the incident, the General Manager Corporate Communications, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Yakubu Dati confirmed the incident but he said the robbery was put under control by the intervention of the joint security force in the airport premises.

He reportedly said, “There was an exchange of fire which resulted in the death of one of the robbers. The level of causality is being ascertained. The situation has since been brought under control by the swift intervention of joint security force.’’

‘‘They were apparently attempting to rob a bureau-de-change near the airport. Normal operations and flight have not been affected by the incident’’ Dati affirmed.
