How Dogara’s effort to reconcile Saraki, Buhari failed

A late night meeting was called between President Muhammadu Buhari and the leaders of the National Assembly on Wednesday.

It was hoped by all and sundry that the President and Senate President may finally settle their discord and be on the same page.

But it turns out no such thing happened as Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, was unsuccessful in his attempt to end the lingering acrimony between the Presidency and Bukola Saraki.

In a resolution passed last week, the House had asked Dogara to intervene in Saraki’s case at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, by setting up a meeting with Buhari and Saraki.

However, the Presidency reportedly insisted that Saraki must completely cut ties with Ike Ekweremadu and facilitate his removal as Deputy Senate President.

Punch reports that the Presidency views going against Ekweremadu as one of possible political solutions to the ongoing trial of Saraki by Code of Conduct Tribunal for a an alleged false declaration of assets.

Saraki is however, said to be averse to the idea, insisting that he would not betray Ekweremadu.

A senior National Assembly official revealed to Punch that: “The view of the Presidency is that the arrangement in the Senate whereby a PDP senator is the deputy president in an All Progressives Congress Party-led government is a misnomer, which should not be allowed. If there is a political option, this is one; the arrangement is not right.”

It is however, reported that during Wednesday night’s meeting with the national assembly, President Buhari failed to address the trial of Saraki at the CCT.

Instead, the lawmakers were left disappointed as the President simply talked about other national issues.
