Police ‘may arrest Ekweremadu’, others over forgery

There is a possibility that the police might arrest Senator lke Ekweremadu, Deputy Senate President as well as some former key officers of the 7th Senate this week over forgery allegations.

The Senators might be picked up by the police over their failure to honor an invitation to answer questions about their roles in the alleged forgery of the rules of the Senate in 2015.

According to Punch Newspaper, the Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Department, Garki Abuja is awaiting a go-ahead from the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase to effect the arrest.

A source at the Force intimated the newspaper that some senior police officers would convene over the matter at the start of work and after the meeting, the investigating department would be asked to arrest the concerned officers by the end of the week.

The police had first invited some principal officers of the Senate over the alleged forgery in July, 2015 and in another letter dated June 7, 2016 which was signed by the Assistant Inspector General of Police, James Caulcrick asked the officials of the 7th Senate to report to the police for the purpose of conducting further investigations on the fraudulent use of the Senate Standing Order 2015 (as amended) by the Senate.

Caulcrick noted in the letter that not one of the officials invited by the police has honored the invitation to explain their roles with the exception of the Clerk of the National Assembly and that of the Senate.

The planned arrest would be followed by the hearing of the forgery suit which has been filed against the officials at a Federal High Court in Abuja.

The source also said that the police leadership had come to the realisation that they might have to apply “lawful force to compel obedience and cooperation” from the suspects.

He said, “Since the suit has been filed, we will arrest the men if they fail to honour our invitation. We are only waiting for the go-ahead from the IGP. We are hoping to pick them up this week or before the hearing of the suit begins.”
