“Arrest or extradition of Kashamu is illegal” – Federal High Court gives judgement

by Kolapo Olapoju

Security agencies in Nigeria have been restrained from arresting and transporting the Senator-elect for Ogun East Senatorial District, Buruji Kashamu, to the United States to stand trial on drug-trafficking charges.

The judgement was given on Wednesday, May 27, by a Federal High Court in Lagos.

Delivering the judgement, Justice Okon Abang, declared the arrest and extradition of Kashamu as illegal, saying he had already been exonerated by two British courts.

Abang said Kashamu had earlier obtained a judgment in Nigeria in January 2014 barring his arrest and extradition and since the judgment had not been set aside, he could not be arrested and extradited.

The judge also awarded a cost in the sum of N20,000 against the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, the Attorney General of the Federation, the National Security Adviser to the President, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
