by Rachel Ogbu

asuu strike

There are indications that the Federal Government and university lecturers have began new talks to end the on-going strike in universities across the nation.

Yesterday, Minister of Labour and Productivity, Emeka Wogu, announced that it has entered into fresh negotiation with Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Leading the negotiation the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim.

Wogu speaking to the Bamanga Tukur-led leadership of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee (NWC) on the activities of his ministry said that the government was not comfortable with the original agreement, which he described as complex.

“We have made offer to ASUU. It is as complex as presented. Negotiation is ongoing. The National Assembly is equally involved,” he said.

“We believe they will soon call off the strike. I personally and passionately appeal to them to call off the strike.”

“It will not affect the negotiation if they call off the strike. It is better for them to be inside than outside. Students have equally appealed to them.”

”The nine-point agreements ASUU signed with Federal Government were: funding requirements for revitalisation of Nigerian universities and Federal Government’s assistance to state universities.”

According to reports, they also agreed on payment of earned allowances, including the establishment of NUPEMCO and progressive increase in annual budgetary allocation to education to 26 percent between 2009 and 2020, an amendment of the pension/retirement age of academics on the professorial cadre from 65 to 70 years, reinstatement of prematurely dissolved governing councils and transfer of Federal Government landed property to universities.

There was also an agreement on setting up of research development council and provision of research equipment to laboratories and classrooms in universities.

  3. Well all i have to say is that the federal gov. dont know how we the students of nigeria are feeling bcos they have sent their wards outside to go and study assuming they were going here they would know how we feel. all the fg just have to do is to yield to the demands of asuu, but no, they want us to suffer bcos how we say nigeria is the giant of africa when our education sector is not moving at all all i just have to say is that they should yield to the demands of asuu so that they call off the strike and let students return back to class.

  4. The FG & ASUU should workout the differences. We are sick and tired of waiting at home. Please gov’mnt do what you can because we want to spend 4yrs at school. Wowowooo. 😉

I still want to know!! 4rm ajagba student of human med uniport call 08032366765

  12. D demands 2 meet up wit ar very difficult 2 settle in a stand, I meant dat, ASUU shuld call back d students into classes n go 2 FG for renegotiation. Cos if u leave FG, till next 5 yrs, dey will not come up wit any reasonable remedies 2 dis case. U guys do dis godforsaken rubbish becos ur kids ar in private skls or probably outside studying. Dat is one of the reasons why u couldn’t put ursef in our shoes. Pls call bak d strike….Biko

  13. The federal government should sort out thier differences with asuu and get this shit done with, cause we are the ones suffering delay and other numerous consequences….

  15. GOD help us all

  16. We should be cosiderate ASUU as tried Fø̲̣̣я̅ the past four years condoling and tolerating the FG Fø̲̣̣я̅ all their misconduct wat  suggest is that ASUU should fight Fø̲̣̣я̅ their right and tjhat which rightly belongs t̶̲̥̅̊ợ̣̣̇̇̇ them without delay

  17. 18. If i may say that its a total dimay t̶̲̥̅̊ợ̣̣̇̇̇ the Nigeria government Fø̲̣̣я̅ neglecting the education sector to be a dilapidated issue in this country, they don’t feel the pain of the poor masses because their children fly out of the country t̶̲̥̅̊ợ̣̣̇̇̇ school abroad it is really a pitty and a shame on our leader who calls themselves ministers a̶̲̥̅̊n̶̲̥̅̊d̶̲̥̅̊ commissioner I̶̲̥̅̊n̶̲̥̅̊ various office. I here support ASUU and all other Unions who is fighting Fø̲̣̣я̅ the interest a̶̲̥̅̊n̶̲̥̅̊d̶̲̥̅̊ the betterment of our education and for the future of the younger generation, i here implore all the Union never t̶̲̥̅̊ợ̣̣̇̇̇ allow the FG to Cajoled them again Fø̲̣̣я̅ the second time and they should do everything within their possible best t̶̲̥̅̊ợ̣̣̇̇̇ force the FG implement the 2009 MOU and all other agreement….. I SUPPORT U̶̲̥̅̊ ASUU and all other union carry go

  19. Asuu and fg should call off this strike before or is it by the time we take weapons and begin terrorizing the country before they will answer us because that is what they want since their children are not schooling in nigeria why should they answer us

  20. The nation is highly bless, but likes competence an capacity to use the resources that is why corruption, become cronic to every nigerian, let beware of corruption,an stay with clean hands.

  21. Pls Asuu…negotiate wit d fg n call off the strike. Tired of home already!!

  22. The demand of asuu frm federal govt is too numerous for easier implementation, renegotiation is quite necessary now while they call off dis strike nd allow the students 2 continue dia studies……but come to think of it, if fg eventualy implement asuu’s offer, wont we hav more of oliver twists again……………… ?

  23. Asuu is a coward! They belive in strike as their only weapon when dialogue can best solve a problem. They are nt aware of the damages they cause to student’s future and to peoples’ businesses around the university community!!!

  24. pls asuu taking for better position so the student well come back to there various school pls .specialy nsuk.no first semester exam yet pls lok at this issuren …..

  25. Pls Asuu call off d strike n 4get abt dem

  26. from the little i’ve been able to gather, the matter still remains very unclear to me. Some things that happen today are as a result of acts of corruption done by both government and the governed. We should today join hands to stop corruption so that tomorrow will be better than yesterday.

  27. Nig.gvrment is disappointng &disgracing this great country of great wealth & rich manpower by a single. Act of corruption from some evil leaders

  28. I’m Chuks, a student of mouau.dept of accountancy. Pls asuu, u guys should not tink of calling d strike off, until it av reached 3monts.. Need 2 relax a litle, d stress is much.

  29. I want to informed d house dat ASUU have been patient for 4 years waiting 4 d FG to implement d agreement it signed wt d union. Going to court will not make any sense in this country. Who are those controlling d court? (FG off course). That is why ASUU re on strike cos is d only action that will compel FG to honour their promise. We are pleading wt d student to bear wt us as dis is d only option we have to call d FG to order. I believed FG will soon come to their senses n honour our agreement.

  30. Better.asuu pls I cant wait 2 grag. If not 4 d strike I could av graduated last week. Pls 4 м̣̣̥̇̊ÿ̲̣̣̣̥ sake A̶̲̥̅̊₪d̶̲̥̅̊ oda finalist call off the strike.

  31. ASUU should make sure that Mr. President is in attendance and he signed, as the constitution may be placed above the agreement. and the outsider may be acting on his own as this will lead to yet another strike.

  32. Pls asuu call off dis strike oo.

  33. it is good for someone to keep his or her promise, that is the reason why it is very imparetive for someone to know the possibility of him keeping the promise he want to make before making the promise, so what i’m saying is this, this is a contract between federal govt and asuu, so federal govt should please fulfil the promise they have made no matter the cost.

    1. FG can‘t deny d fact dat dia is enof fund 2 foot d bill 2 implment d agreemnt, u‘l agri wif me wen u assess d wort of an avrg politician in govt; insuficient fund can neva b an alibi 4 FG to escape dir vow, it‘s negligence on d part of FG cos dey dnt giv a damn, let ASUU continue barkin! I pray God wil intervene on bhaf of nig students(amen)…

  34. asuv and fg should have mercy on us.

  35. I dnt undastand y asuu will nt negotiate peacefully. We are the ones bearing the pain. Nd d fg should nt have struck a deal if it culd nt keep to it. Come on asuu should take fg to court and resolve this issue.

  36. ASUU, i mean the FG; confusion trailing me. The dereliction and spate of incessant strike in our dear country Nigerian institutions of higher learning has become a headline in one too many news headlines within and outside the country. Is it reasonable that those who were trainned by the country using the available resources then would turn out to demand for even more than what was invested in them because they want to be in thesame cadre with polititicians in terms of financial support and renumerations? Most times our piorities are misplaced and as such we end up achieving nothing. ASUU and FG pls remember that the zouths todaz would lead you tomorrow.curruption in the future is inevitable and our fathers and grand father would sit back criticising while thier seed keeps thriving in the fertile soil on which thez have prepared fir usä guzs lead bz example

    1. Asuu pls do something 2 help b4 somtng wil do us.

  37. Naija things are worrisome, how can a single individual steal billions ov Naira for his own personal use, and U guyz are now saying Asuu demands can’t be implemented? Nigerians are peace lovers if not….hmmm…(noding)

    1. I support u:how can an individual spend up to 1.2billion on just a wedding while d students are subjected to dis injustice

  38. But wait o i am not trying to support the fg…i just want to ask a question…where is the money fg do give asuu before we embarked on this strike…cos i have not seen any improvement in my school

  39. The FG must as a matter of fact pay attention to ASUU’s endless grave issues. They r not suppose to fight before they ll motivated.

  40. We pray nd plead wit asuu 2call of dx strike. Dx action is nt funny 2d student at al. I wish d strike would b called off nw

  41. it will be wise if fg will negotiate with asuu and yield to their demand in the interest of the student

  42. Asuu pls help us, we α̲̅я̩̥̊ε̲̣̣̣̥ tired of A̶̲̥̅ℓ̊ℓ̊ dis things wE knw ЪŦ our government α̲̅я̩̥̊ε̲̣̣̣̥ nt ready τ̲̅ȍ realize us cos deir children α̲̅я̩̥̊ε̲̣̣̣̥ schooling in dis our country. God wil punish federal government

  43. It is an absolute insensitivity on the side of the federal govt. What stops them frm implementing the agreement it freely entered into wit the Asuu. It’s quitn demeaning, despicable nd xpression of lack of vision.

  44. asuu..is right and fed govt is right too. The demands from asuu is not easy to meet like that, as an economic student i knw what it means….asuu should renegotiate while lectures are going on and sue govt to court if they cant keep to their word than always striking as if they are selling groundnut. They toi with our future n hold us cu-de-sec…much strike makes asuu loose relevance…

  45. am very happy about all the information i hear from here

  46. ASUU should call-off this strike and go into negotiation with FG industrial action cannot be the only means of dealing with issues like this as only the masses suffers the pain….my humble self was counting on days to be a Bsc holder in zoology but now my fate relies on hw quick they call off……

  47. The earlier, the better. Of course, I don’t blame both the FG& her ASUU counterparts since they have their wards in private Universities and colleges abroad they can afford to play dice with our education.
Sooner or later, the roll-call will be made and we will see the last man standing.
