Attahiru Jega explains why new polling units will be created

by Laila Ibrahim

Independent National Electoral Commission chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega, has said that the electoral body has no hidden motives concerning the creation of new polling units.

It will be noted that Jega has been under scrutiny from various groups – most recently the Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide – concerning the creation of an additional 30,000 polling units across Nigeria, with claims that the commission is being shady with its plans.

Jega, who was invited by the Senate Committee on INEC to explain the rationale behind plans to create new polling units in the country, said that he has been unjustifiably accused of creating polling units to favour one section of the country against the other.

He said that creating new polling units is to ease the access of voters to the ballot box in the 2015 general election by de-congesting overcrowded polling units.

Jega added that the commission was obliged to make preparations to hold elections in all parts of the country even in areas where there are displaced persons, as long as there are registered voters.

Elections in the troubled North-East

The INEC boss also said that elections would hold in the troubled North-East states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa.

According to Jega, if elections could hold in countries such Afghanistan and Iraq, it could hold in Nigeria’s troubled North East in 2015.

He stressed that if elections could hold in more volatile areas, it could hold in Nigeria’s North-East where he believed the situation was being brought under control.
