NPFL Roundup: MFM seal narrow win against Wikki Tourist | Sunshine Stars demolish El -Kanemi Warriors

The 12th round of league football matches in the country came alive last weekend as 9 league matches were played while three games got live TV coverage.

Ismaila Gata’s brace took him above Tony Okpotu in the race for the Golden Boot with his 7th goal of the season.

16 goals were scored this weekend taking the tally of goals scored in the league so far to a total of 242 goals, averaging just over 2-goals per-game

The game between Giwa and Ranger at the Rwang Pam stadium in Jos was abandoned, with Rangers still in 1 – 0 lead with a goal by Godwin Aguda.

Here is my recount of what transpired this weekend in the NPFL:

MFM kicked off proceedings for the weekend at the Agege Stadium on Friday night, when they played host to Wikki Tourist.

With an impressive number of fans available that night, a win for MFM was high on cards and no surprise, Stephen Odey‘s 35th minute strike was all MFM needed to take maximum points, and temporarily move up to 4th on the log.

The Oluyole Warriors secured another home win, after defeating visiting Heartland, 2-1, at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan. Muyiwa Lawal‘s lead lasted only five minutes before Anthony Oussou restored parity for Heartland. Eventually, Seun Akinyemi grabbed the Winner for Kadiri Ikhana‘s Shooting Stars.

Nasarawa United continued their resurgence in the league with a hard fought 2-1 victory over Plateau United. Seun Sogbeso put the host, Nasarawa, ahead in the 19th minute before Julius Nuhu equalised in the 45th minute. Esosa Igbinoba sealed victory for Nasarawa United late in the 79th minute of the game.

Sunshine Stars
are looking like a reborn side truly. They recorded a very impressive victory against Enyimba last week and continued their rich vein of form with a comprehensive victory over El-Kanemi Warriors in Akure.

Afolabi Okiki put them ahead in the 14th minute from 12 yards. Isiaka Oladuntoye extended their lead in the 49th minute before Dayo Ojo completed the rout with another penalty, in the added time.

Kano Pillars suffered a surprise 1-0 loss to Rivers United away in Port Harcourt. Bernard Ovoke scored late in the 77th minute to seal maximum points for Stanley Egunma’s boys and condemn Baba Ganaru’s Pillars to their 3rd loss of the season.

In Nnewi, Okereke Madubuchi‘s 59th minute solitary strike was the difference, as Ifeanyi Ubah FC defeated Warri Wolves in Anambra. The win ensures Ifeanyi Ubah leap-frog Rangers at the top of the table, pending the completion of their game.

4

Akwa United’s patchy form continued in Makurdi as they recorded yet another loss on the road. This time around, it was to Lobi Stars as Imeanger’s 52nd minute effort turned out to be the decider in this encounter.

Ismaila Gata‘s 6th and 7th goal of the season helped Niger Tornadoes to a 2-0 win and keep Ikorodu United rooted to the bottom of the league table. And with neither Tony Okpotu nor Chisom Egbuchulam scoring, Ismaila Gata ascends to the top of the goal scorers chart.
