Benin Republic elects new president | Prime Minister concedes defeat

Fifty-seven year old businessman and opposition candidate in the Benin Republic presidential election, Patrice Talon, has emerged winner of the country’s election after garnering majority of votes.

Talon, who vied for the presidential seat alongside the Prime Minister of Benin, Lionel Zinsou, will replace the incumbent president, Boni Yaya.

Yaya has completed his two five year terms in office as President of Benin. He is expected to step down this year.

Talon’s opponent in the election, Lionel Zinsou, who is also the country’s Prime Minister, is reported to have called Talon- even before the release of official results- to congratulate him.

Zinsou is quoted to have told journalist that: “The provisional results point to a decisive victory for Patrice Talon. The difference is significant, (Talon’s) electorial victory is certain.

“I have called Patrice Talon this evening to congratulate him on his victory, wish him good luck and put myself at his disposal to prepare for the handover.”

The election saw about 4.7 million Beninese voters. Many Beninese are looking up to Talon to end poverty and high unemployment in the country.
