The leader of Biafran Zionists Movement (BZM), Barrister Benjamin Onwuka and 10 others were on Wednesday, 19 November, remanded in prison for alleged treason.

They were arraigned on a four-count charge by a Federal High Court in Enugu, bordering on treason and attempt to intimidate and instil fear in President Goodluck Jonathan and Governor Sullivan Chime through their activities in Biafran Zionists Movement.

The separatists were arrested in June 2014, after they besieged the Enugu State Broadcasting Service (ESBS) with the objective of declaring an independent state of Biafra.

The suspects would, however, plead not guilty to the charges against them, while the Senior State Counsel representing the Attorney-General of the Federation, D. E Kaswe applied for adjournment.

The presiding judge, Justice DVC Agishi, in his ruling adjourned the case till 8 December for hearing.

Agishi stated that in view of the not guilty plea of the accused persons, he needed adjournment to enable him prepare for witnesses.

Responding to the adjournment, counsel to the accused persons, Olu Omotayo raised no objection. He, however, prayed for a short date on the grounds that his clients had been in police custody for several months.
