Bitter-Sweet: Pastor who was jailed on false charges released after 8 years (PICTURED)

If you think that being a Christian these days is a safe endeavor, then you might want to think again.  A missionary from India was just released from prison after facing a false charge that kept him behind bars for eight years.   The missionary has only been identified as “Pastor Samuel,” but has experienced the kind of nightmarish ordeal that no human being should have to endure.

Samuel arrived in Jhharkhand, India in 2004, where he was arrested for allegedly being part of a riot that caused the deaths of 19 people.   He told police that he had nothing to do with the incident, but they didn’t believe him and put him in prison anyway.   Someone identified him as being part of a rebel group that he knew nothing about.

The pastor was separated from his wife and daughter for the entire period, and he only got some kind of justice in 2010, when a judge ruled that there was insufficient evidence to convict him of his crimes.   But the problem for poor Samuel is that the courts then again delayed the next hearing that would get him released.  This wasn’t a short delay either, taking three years for the courts to get it together.

He is finally free today, but only after being traumatized by his misery.

“I was totally depressed in this situation, but the Lord helped me to realize he has a special plan for me to be in the prison,” he said. “The Lord is helping me to share the love of Jesus with the prisoners. Through my ministry, I see the transformation that is happening in their lives.”

Samuel says that while he was in prison, he spent his time helping other inmates find Christ.
