A 3-year-old boy in India who started getting acne and a deeper voice when he was just 1-1/2 has been cured of premature puberty thanks to a complex brain surgery.

The child’s parents reported that he began undergoing emotional and physical changes about a decade too early. His genitals started to grow and his behavior became increasingly aggressive, they said, according to the Times of India.

A team of doctors at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) in Puducherry determined that the boy had an excess of male hormones in his blood as well as abnormal tissue in his hypothalamus, the part of the brain that releases hormones from the pituitary gland.

For two years, the doctors tried to prevent further puberty-related changes with expensive injections. However, these did not yield the desired results.

Doctors instead opted to try a complicated type of brain surgery to remove the abnormal tissue. The operation took three hours and doctors used an operating microscope.

The boy, who is now 3-1/2 years old, responded well to the surgery and his hormone values dropped to a normal level for his age.

Roopesh Kumar, who led the team of doctors at Jimpser, told the Times of India that the boy’s condition, dubbed “precocious puberty,” impacts less than one in a million people. Girls with this condition hit puberty before they turn 8, while boys who experience precocious puberty start changing before they hit age 9.

“It can be completely cured by appropriate medical or surgical intervention if diagnosed in the early stages,” Kumar said.

He also said that the boy will not need any further treatment.
