Episode 4

Weeks on and Timi is yet to find himself a primary place of assignment after rejecting a secondary school in gwagwa. To him gwagwa is a ghetto and he will definitely not get the kind of life he is looking for in such a place, he cannot even stand the thought of being in such a ghetto. He is compelled to pay the sum of fifteen thousand naira by the school principal just for him to leave gwagwa for somewhere better in the federal capital territory.  Timi had lots going through his mind concerning gwagwa, he didn’t have enough money for his personal use not to talk of any to give out to some principal. But after thinking it through and about what will come of him if he stays in gwagwa, he decided that fifteen thousand naira was not too much after all, but then his mind is not at peace…

“I hope you know what you are doing”

Timi thought to himself, obviously confuse

Aniete and Rhoda amongst other chicks are now history and Timi is in a world of his own, it has not been so easy for him as he has been up and about morning through evening looking for a place of primary assignment. He doesn’t want to be like a fool in his mother’s eyes and telling his mother what he is going through is a no no neither is going back to port-harcourt an option. Remembering he told his mother he needed to take his own decisions and live his own life by those decision, make his own mistakes, keeps him pushing solo. Timi’s phone rang… he grinned happily as he glance at the screen of his phone, under the hot Abuja sun, he needed something to relieve him of the disturbing thoughts and this call is just a way forward. Mrs Alice Horsefall is at the other end of the phone… gleefully he speaks

“Hello mother, am fine thanks”

pretending everything was alright

“mom, how are you? ”it is really nice to hear from you, how is port-harcourt. Okay mom, surprise written all over his face, his eyes open wide…

seriously, how much? Thank you so much mother, sure… I found a place finally, yes it is cool, I mean to say nice. Okay mother. Mother, that was just a dream, I am fine. Yes, really I am, forget the dream… listens for a while…

“Mother I sleep in a friend’s place, yes we good. Sure. Mother forget about the whole coming to port-harcourt thing, I’ve said it that I am fine. Okay mom, thanks. Bye….

“Oh thank God” he says to himself immediately after dropping the call.  As soon as he drops the call, another call grace his phone, it is Alihu, another person Timi is ever happy to speak to since after camp…

“O boy, how you dey naw?

Visibly impressed he continues

Seriously? Lucky you…

Rub his palm on his head

“I am still looking for, they gave me a secondary school in gwagwa like I told you before now and the place is nothing to write about, it is a pure ghetto, …. Manage? Hmmm it’s not something I can manage at all. You can imagine the principal of the school just stripped me of every kobo I had on me today, just so he could cover me up and let me go find another place… I know it is normal, so how are things at your end? Oh, so fresh… hailing Alihu “fresh boy…you are enjoying ooo. Well I am hoping for the best, I am tired of going about. I even went to the ministries and everywhere is already chunked up. I will keep trying…

After camp, Timi went to port-harcourt and stayed for a week, he had refused to tell his mother his challenge, so to avoid any form of panic from Mrs. Alice Horsefall. But his countenance all through his being at home kept his mother perplexed and uneasy, hoping Timi will somehow approach her on changing his mind about staying in port-harcourt. But none of that happened and now here Timi is, still unsettled. Mrs Alice is very much worried but her son had already given 101 reasons not to be worried.

After a long walk and a stressful day, Timi got to his friend’s place where he sleeps and found the place locked, one can see the tension on his face even from a distance. Timi sits and he is brooding for a long moment, “the kiss of struggle” he says to himself but within him, he still had a little beat of self-esteem and self respect. Unlike Timi, right now he wishes to gulp a glass of whiskey, he wishes to lit a stick of cigarette, maybe little wrap of marijuana will clear his head, he thought to himself as he dials his phone and soon he is talking.

“you mean you travelled, why didn’t you tell me, did you just say you didn’t plan it? But you should have called. So when will you be back?”

Shockingly he screams

“Two weeks?” he dropped the last line with so much surprise in his tone, anger and confusion. Now that was a bombshell…

“O boy, where you expect me to chill na, wey my clothes? Your neighbour’s place? You mean this don’t you? Alright, thanks.

Timi’s  stand from where he is seated outside the apartment hastily with so much puzzlement, not knowing exactly what to say, or do, he moves unsteadily, he walked with lots of dignity towards the suppose flat where his belongings has been kept. A year ago if he was told he would be thrown out of a house, he wouldn’t have believed. Timi have never been in such situation before and this makes it quite traumatising for him to handle. He has never been this sad all his life, not even when his father passed on.

God help me” he utters to himself. What’s my name?  He ask himself like a drunk or someone who is in some illusion state and trying to pull out of it.

Timi horsefall”  he replied.

Timi has a meeting with the principal of eastern high school, one of the best high schools in Abuja, located somewhere around airport road. He was glad at this opportunity when a corper he knew from camp told him about it and it is one huge opportunity to jump at. He just can’t wait for Monday to come so he can meet with the principal. For some days now Timi has been sleeping in a mechanic garage, something he would have never thought of doing. But Timi learned a lot these past few days. One of his misery night when he was fuddled by drink he met a guy who told him, he sleeps in their car and that his car is like a mobile home. Well, this was his fate and he is taking it as it comes.  Timi often shrugged at the flash of the life he has been living in the past few weeks and hoped that somehow he will pull through and have someday good to talk about at the end.

It is Monday morning, exactly 11:45am and the students are dispersed all over the field, probably they are out on break. Timi loves the environment as he walks into the school premises smiling slightly. He moves to the security desk just beside the entrance, signs the visitors register and then he was directed towards the principal’s office by one of the security guard while one stands akimbo next to the gate.

On reaching the principal’s office, the receptionist demands that Timi should exercise some patience for an hour for the principal to meet up with him as the principal is presently busy. He is not pleased with this but right now he doesn’t have an option but to obey the first command before complain. After sitting for over 10minutes Timi decided to stroll round the school premises, so to reduce his anxiousness and his pococurantism and also get familiar with the environment just in case luck is on his side and he is to be taken.

The school bell rings, all the students disappear slowly into their respective class rooms but some students who appears to be either in year 11 or so are arguing at a corner of the school premises, somewhere far away from where anyone could see them, somewhere less noticeable, somewhere cryptic. If Timi hadn’t been so curious on hearing tiny voices he wouldn’t have an idea that people are there, or maybe because he have so much time on his side he was interested in almost everything around. In less than 10 seconds all the students who are more of male and one female ran away as Timi approached, leaving one of them helplessly on the floor, Timi is in an awe of shock at what he is seeing. A student who just got shot and the gun is staring at him from beside the victim. Confusingly Timi reached for the gun, trying to help the young man, looks around but no one seems to be close, the students who were here seconds ago seems to have disappeared into the tin air, he could barely scream for help. He looks around in search for help, drops the gun and cleans his hand on the boy who is lying almost lifeless.

“you said you saw some students, where are they, what classroom did they enter?” I can’t believe this young man, such a crime, nothing close to it have ever happened around the environs of this school and now you are here saying you saw some students” who sent you, who sent you to kill him… a loud female furious voice speaks

Indistinctively voices in a semi-crowed murmuring as Timi is being lead by few teachers and the principal from one class to another…

“we’ve been to almost all the classes and still you are unable to identify one student amongst all those you said you saw”, or should we take you to the primary section, or the nursery section” the corybantic voice of the principal speaks with confusion, disappointment and fear…

“kill him… kill him..kill him, we will kill him.. some voices amongst the teachers speaks out loud…

i swear I didn’t do it, the students did, I swear, how can I come here to commit such a crime, I saw them run but…” scared Timi speaks tearfully.

A senior teacher slaps him on the mouth…

“oya, remove all these fake nysc wears, take them off, your shoes everything” another male voice utters…

“I didn’t do it, I can’t do it, it wasn’t me”… pleadingly Timi’s voice trembles as he manages to speak

“wonder shall never end”  a tiny female voice rises from the crowed…

The police sirens can now be heard from a distance…

“thank God the police is here”  the principal says with an indifferent feeling. An ambulance sound follows suit…
