Brigadier-General Nnamdi Okorie-Affia, Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has decried the incessant requests for posting of corps members to places of their choice.
According to a press statement signed by Mr Sheu Bello, a Public Relations Officer, in the NYSC, the director-general restated his commitment to the Nigerian project in the deployment of prospective corps members to the 36 states of the federation and the FCT for national service.
He said that a situation, where individuals would send in requests for posting of their wards to choice places was contrary to the NYSC posting policy.
Okorie-Affia had earlier warned parents to desist from seeking preferential posting for their children and wards.
Findings, however, revealed that concerned parents still besiege the headquarters of the scheme to seek for posting of their children to choice places.
Some of the corps members, who earlier spoke with NAN, said the request became necessary because of the increasing spate of violence in the country.
Okorie-Affia said that postings based on requests would no longer be accepted, adding that the purpose of the scheme should not be jettisoned.
The former Minister of Youth Development, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, on Nov. 17, 2011, told the management of the NYSC to stop posting new corps members to Borno and Yobe.
In compliance with the directive, the authorities of the NYSC then announced that as a result of security challenges in Borno and Yobe, corps members would not be posted there.
In reaction to the announcement, Alhaji Ahmed Shetima, Governor of Borno, then paid a courtesy visit to the minister pleading that the minister should reconsider his decision.
The NYSC scheme started in 1973.
THE South-West chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has given the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS) and the Minister of Police Affairs seven days ultimatum to arrest the Special Assistant to the Ekiti State Governor on Internal Security, Deji Adesokan and others for allegedly disrupting a youth programme in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, on Saturday.
The party also warned the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and Governor Kayode Fayemi of the consequences of their attack on members of opposition parties, especially the PDP.
The party, in a statement issued on Monday by its zonal publicity secretary, Mr Kayode Babade, said it was curious that inspite of the presence of policemen and men of the SSS at the venue of the event, Fayemi’s thugs fired several gunshots and no one was arrested.
“We therefore give the Director-General of SSS, IGP and the Minister of Police Affairs seven days to effect the arrest of Deji Adesokan and others, who invaded Irepodun Hotel, Ado-Ekiti, venue of the youth programme last Saturday.
“If this is not done, it can then be concluded that security agencies in Ekiti State have turned themselves to appendages of the Fayemi-led government,” the party said.
Robert Salo, an incredibly lucky 18-year-old high school student from Brooklyn, New York, has won one thousand dollars a week for the rest of his life, NBC New York reports.
The teen won the money by playing the New York Lottery’s “Win for Life” scratch-off game and was one of several other winners from Queens and Long Island.According to the station, the winners will receive their ceremonial checks on Tuesday.
Salo, who is graduating high school this month, told the New York Daily News he’s ecstatic about the win.
“This is the first thing I’ve ever won,” he told the paper. “It’s a good way to start out life.”
Thankfully, the 18-year-old didn’t share the same fate as Mirlande Wilson, the 36-year-old McDonalds worker who claimed she had a winning Mega Millions tickets –then said she lost it.
“I have no idea where it is. I’m not sure I have it,” Wilson told the New York Post.
A few days later, three Maryland public school workers revealed themselves as the winners of the jackpot. Choosing to remain anonymous, the lucky three told theBaltimore Sun had each pitched in $20 to buy $60 worth of the tickets from different places.
Kanye West and Kim Kardashian have only been dating for a few short months, but the couple is seriously thinking about their future, according to reports.
“They’re seriously talking marriage, and yes, she would [accept his proposal],” one of Kanye’s friends told the magazine, adding, “Kanye says he can’t wait to see her carrying his child. He says she will look beautiful pregnant.”
Once Kim finalizes her long, drawn out divorce from NBA player Kris Humphries, there’s a very good possibility the two will tie the knot, considering Kanye was already thinking about seeing Kim walk down the aisle before they were even out as a couple. In his song “Way Too Cold,” he admitted he’d been in love with Kim for some time:
“And I admit I fell in love with Kim/’Round the same time she fell in love with him” were referring Kim and Humphries.
In many ways the couple has been acting as though Kim isn’t going through a divorce at all and they haven’t held back when it comes to making grand romantic gestures. According to the New York Daily News, Kanye was blown away by Kim’s surprise visit to Ireland for his 35th birthday the $750,000 Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 she bought him as a gift.
And Kim wasn’t the only one handing out lavish gifts. Media Take Out reports the rapper gave the 31-year-old reality star a huge diamond ring as a sign of his love for her.
The couple, who are rumored to be moving in together soon, are “the real deal,” a source told Us Weekly, who added that Kim is completely smitten with Kanye. “I’ve never seen her like this,” said the source.
Kim might not want to rush to the alter with Kanye once she’s officially a single woman again, but experts say the couple is a match made in Hollywood heaven.
“This is a good, good fit for her….” “Millionaire Matchmaker” Patti Stanger told Hollywood Life recently. “They have the attraction, [Kanye's] got the money, he’s got the talent, [Kim's] got the money. She traded up for a change, and this is beyond [ex-boyfriend] Reggie [Bush]. It’s an equal fit, if not bigger.”

he decision by the Board of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to ask its Director General, Arnma Oteh, to go on compulsory leave has been declared illegal, as they have no official mandate to enforce such a resolution.
The Investment & Securities Act 2007 vests the authority to either appoint or remove the Director General of SEC on the president, on the recommendation of the Minister of Finance, though the Board is empowered to oversee the management and operation of the Commission.
The Communications Adviser to the suspended SEC DG, Obi Adindu, who spoke with our reporter, said Ms Oteh’s current travails go beyond allegations of misappropriation levelled against her. He says it is more of a conspiracy by some persons who are uncomfortable with the way with she handled the internal control since she came into office. Mr Adindu held that her grip on the internal control prevented people from continuing to do the things they were used to doing –taking monies without accountability.
“Some people have said it is misappropriation. There is absolutely no misappropriation anywhere. But, it is interesting that the same board whose life span ought to expire this week on Friday June 15 is angling for an illegal tenure extension through the back door on the basis of the so-called special circumstance,” he said.
Describing the decision as “the latest manifestation of the conspiracy against Oteh,” Mr Adindu said that due process was clearly violated since “it is not the responsibility of the Board to appoint anybody to take over in any capacity, whether acting or substantive.”
“That is the responsibility of the Minister of Finance to recommend for Presidential ratification. If they genuinely want to ascertain the veracity of her (Oteh’s) claims, it is important that they do what they want to do, and due process has to be respected, because a Board cannot wake up to say it is asking somebody to act,” he said.
Last March, the board had directed its audit and finance committee to investigate all issues raised during the last Public Hearing by the House of Representatives Committee on Capital Market, which sought to unravel the near collapse of the country’s capital market in 2008.
The committee, which was mandated to investigate the sources and uses of funds for the Project 50 event, had recommended an independent audit of Project 50. The key actors in the management of the funds were asked to step aside to allow for an unhindered investigation.
After deliberating on the recommendations of the committee, the Board resolved to institute an independent investigation of the Project 50 programme by a reputable independent audit firm to be appointed soon.
Meanwhile, the Board has given the Council of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) notice to immediately commence the process to disengage after successfully bringing stability to the country’s capital market.

he only way the Federal Government can truly honour Moshood Abiola, the winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, considered the freest and fairest presidential election in Nigerian history, is to declare the late businessman and philanthropist, a former President, his family has said.
The election was annulled by former military ruler Ibrahim Babangida before the final results were announced by the then electoral chairman Humphrey Nwosu. Mr. Abiola was having a clear lead over his rival, Bashir Tofa, before the election was annulled. Mr. Nwosu and other senior officials of the commission later stated that the remaining unannounced results showed that Mr. Abiola clearly won the election.
The former military dictator, Sani Abacha jailed The Ogun State born Mr. Abiola for declaring himself President. He later died in prison in July 1998.
Declare him President
In a bid to immortalise Mr. Abiola, the Federal Government had on the celebration of democracy day (May 29) renamed the University of Lagos after him. However, Mr. Abiola’s family is not content with the gesture.
“We want the federal government to realise that this man won the election and he should be declared as a former President of this country. That is what we are looking for,” Bashiru Abiola, the head of the extended Abiola family said.
The family head made the statement at the annual June 12 celebration which took place in Abeokuta, adding that the recognition should also include all benefits enjoyed by former heads of state in the country to the late politician’s family.
Bashiru Abiola stated that the family has fared poorly since the politician’s death because the late politician was the bread winner of the family. He said “since he died, we have not got any help except from the state government.”

There was trouble at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital morgue on Tuesday when two families fought over the identity of a corpse.
Some families were asked to re-identify the corpses of their loved-ones who died in the Dana Airline plane crash of June 3, 2012, but this had become increasingly difficult as the bodies had started decomposing.
Just two days ago, there was fracas at the morgue when some families questioned the need for repeated physical identification exercises, when the bodies could have initially been tagged.
However, on Tuesday, two families claimed the body of Jones Ifekanwa, one of over 160 persons who died when the commercial aircraft plunged into a residential Lagos neighbourhood.
The two families engaged each other in a war of words which almost degenerated into fisticuffs.
Earlier, some members of the Ifekanwa family had identified late ifekanwa’s body, before a second family, who did not disclose their name, identified the same body as that of their loved one.
Following the clash, the State Chief Medical Examiner, John Obafunwa, intervened, asking the enraged families to wait another four weeks for the DNA result.
