A panellist on ABC News show “This Week,” George Will called real estate mogul Donald Trump a ”bloviating ignoramus,” questioning why presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney is associating with the real estate mogul, who continues to question President Obama’s birthplace.
“I do not understand the cost benefit here,” Will said on the “This Week” roundtable. “The costs are clear. The benefit – what voter is gonna vote for him (Romney) because he is seen with Donald Trump? The cost of appearing with this bloviating ignoramus is obvious it seems to me.”
“Donald Trump is redundant evidence that if your net worth is high enough, your IQ can be very low and you can still intrude into American politics,” Will added. “Again, I don’t understand the benefit. What is Romney seeking?”
Fox Business Network anchor Liz Claman agreed, adding “it’s a dangerous game that Mitt Romney is playing here because Donald Trump doesn’t have a lot to lose by keeping this birther conversation alive.”
Trump revived the false claims about Obama’s birthplace on Thursday, citing a discredited story about a literary agency that mistakenly listed that Obama was born in Kenya in a recently discovered catalog of clients that included the president.
“Look, it’s very simple,” Trump told The Daily Beast. “He said he was born in Kenya and raised in Indonesia… Now they’re saying it was a mistake. Just like his Kenyan grandmother said he was born in Kenya, and she pointed down the road to the hospital, and after people started screaming at her she said, ‘Oh, I mean Hawaii.’ Give me a break.”
The real estate mogul endorsed Mitt Romney in February, and plans to host a fundraiser for him in Manhattan on June 28 according to The Daily Beast.
Trump himself repeatedly flirted with his own presidential run, regularly pushing the false “birtherism” claim that President Obama was not born in the United States.
There’s some tension in the John Edwards trial — between the former senator and a female alternate juror.
The alternate, who on Friday wore a “revealing red top with a single strap and and exposed right shoulder,” is flirting with Edwards.
ABC News described it thus:
The juror clearly instigated the exchanges. She smiles at him. He smiles at her. She giggles. He blushes.
The flirtation has become so obvious that even Edwards’ attorneys have to work to suppress their laughter at the absurdity of it all.
The female alternate juror isn’t the only one behaving oddly — all four alternate jurors dressed in red on Friday after being dressed in yellow Thursday.
The alternates will not vote on the verdict, which the regular 12 jurors are still deliberating over, unless one of the regular jurors is removed.
Edwards faces six felony counts related to campaign finance violations in trying to cover up the affair with his mistress, Rielle Hunter.
The jury has the following instructions, according to the AP:
To convict Edwards, U.S. District Court Judge Catherine C. Eagles instructed the jurors they must conclude beyond a reasonable doubt not only that the candidate knew about the secret payments made on his behalf, but he knew the cover up was illegal and that he went ahead anyway. Even legal experts with detailed knowledge of federal campaign finance rules are split on whether Edwards violated the law.
“American Idol” winner Phillip Phillips had kidney surgery eight times during his journey to victory, his father revealed after Wednesday’s finale. And he’s not done with the doctors just yet.
Phillips was plagued by kidney stones as he strummed and sang his way to the “Idol” title, though his chronic health issues nearly knocked him out of the running.
His many trips under the knife over the course of the competition enabled him to stick it out and clinch the win, but he’s gearing up for yet another operation in coming days – this one to reconstruct his kidneys.
“I’ve been sick this whole show,” Phillips admitted to Kelly Ripa during a call-in chat on Thursday’s “Live with Kelly,” adding that he was “getting prepared” to have the new surgery soon. “I’m ready to feel better, feel like myself,” he said.
Philips Sr. told People that his son did his best throughout the season despite the eight surgeries but clearly hadn’t been able to give 100 percent.
He said it would take “two to four weeks” for him to recover before heading out on the “Idols Live” tour. “He’s healthy, he’s good,” his dad said. “He’s going to have some fun.”
When it comes to finding a mate, men may not be looking for charm and intelligence, but rather a woman who looks dumb – or drunk – enough for a one-night-stand, according to a new study.
In an article in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior, University of Texas at Austin graduate student Cari Goetz and her team focused on the so-called sexual exploitability hypothesis – the idea that men are genetically programmed to look for ‘easy’ sex.
Tests on 76 male students found that they rated vulnerable-looking women as attractive – lending weight to the idea.
‘Male participants rated photographs of women who displayed varying levels of cues to exploitability,’ say the researchers. The ‘cues’ included being sleepy, stupid or inert – and thus easily exploitable.
‘We identified 22 cues indicative of sexual exploitability. Nineteen of these cues were correlated significantly with sexual attractiveness,’ say the researchers.
Men, the researchers think are ‘born’ to have little concern for the consequences of casual trysts, given that their bodies produce somewhere around 85 million sperm cells every day — per testicle.
The goal of the study was to test out the hypothesis that a woman who appears silly or inert, or in other words more ‘sexually exploitable,’ is a turn-on for the average straight man.
In the evolutionary psychology sense, the word ‘exploitable’ simply indicates that a woman is willing or can be more easily pressured into having sex, even if she is a prostitute or a nymphomaniac.
The researchers began testing their model by asking a large group of undergraduate students to nominate some specific actions, body postures, attitudes and personality traits that might signal vulnerability, such as exhaustion, intoxication, or low intelligence.
In the end, the participants of the study had produced a list of 88 signs that a woman might by especially receptive to a man’s advances.
Among the chosen red flags were: lip lick/bite; over-the-shoulder look; sleepy; intoxicated; tight clothing; fat; short; unintelligent; punk; attention-seeking and touching breast.
Next, Goetz and her colleagues scoured the Internet for publicly available images of women displaying each of these 88 cues.
Not marriage material: In the study, the men rejected the silly-looking and drunk women as potential wives or girlfriends
Once they had pictures of women licking their lips, partying, wearing sexy clothing, etc., the researchers cross-checked them with a separate group of students who presumed that the photos indeed matched the cues.
The researchers then invited a fresh group of 76 male students and presented them with the images of presumably ‘ripe-for-the-picking’ women, asking them what they thought of each woman’s overall attractiveness, how easy it would be to ‘exploit’ her using anything from a pickup line to physical force, and her appeal to them as either a short-term or a long-term partner.
The study has revealed that the images of fat or short women had no effect. The participants of the study did not view them as either easy to bed or appealing as partners.
But when it came to reading the more psychological and contextual cues—pictures of silly or childish-looking women, or of women who looked sleepy or drunk, men rated them as being easy to ‘score’ with.
More importantly, the dumb-looking and inert women were also perceived as being more attractive than their more lucid or intelligent-looking peers, but only when it came to short-term relationships.
When the men were asked to judge the same liquored-up, silly-looking women in the photos as potential girlfriends and wives, they had entirely lost their appeal on them.
In a follow-up study, the authors tried to add some nuance to their sexual exploitability hypothesis.
Graduate student David Lewis led a project to zero in on the specific type of man who would be most aware to the sort of ‘exploitability’ cues.
Lewis and his colleagues asked 72 straight men to evaluate the same photos as before.
But this time, the researchers also measured some key personality traits in the men themselves, as well as the extent to which they desired and pursued no-strings-attached sex.
This follow-up study has found that the more promiscuous men who happened also to have deficiencies in personal empathy and warmth were the ones most attuned to female ‘exploitability’ cues, which seems to indicate that not all men are sleazy when it comes to pursuing sex.
|Nigerian lawmakers have again come under attack after former president, Olusegun Obasanjo called them armed robbers at a function in Lagos.
The latest verbal missile is coming from a Canadian who described members of the Cross River State House of Assembly as touts.
The lawmakers in the Cross River State House of Assembly were derided by Mr. Peter Jenkins, a Canadian Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) worker appointed to head the Cross River State Committee on Anti-Deforestation by Governor Liyel Imoke.
The Canadian did not only describe the lawmakers as touts, he has also refused to heed the seven-day ultimatum handed his committee by the House of Assembly asking him to return the timber confiscated from a timber dealer called Mr. Samuel Ukim Awosa.
Jenkins said the Assembly is an amalgam of corrupt touts brought in from motor parks, adding that “some of them cannot even tie their shoes” and therefore have no authority to compel him to obey their resolution.
He told P.M.NEWS that the Assembly members were looking for money from him but would not get a kobo as bribe because most of them are not qualified to be in the Assembly in the first place.
“These people were in the motor park some five years ago and somebody just thought that let’s send these idiots to the Assembly. They are causing so much trouble here for us that is why they are in the Assembly,” he said.
According to him, the Assembly passed “what may probably be the best forestry law in the world without even reading it.”
It was on that score that the lawmakers are regretting passing the law that gave Jenkins the powers to function exclusively without checks from them.
The lawmakers who are now on a tour of South Africa, had on 8 May ordered Jenkins to appear before the House within seven days and to return the timber seized from Awosa following a petition to the Assembly by Awosa.
The directive contained in a recommendation of the House Committee on Judiciary and Public Service Matters, accused Jenkins of “despicable and unconscionable conduct” and accordingly called on him to return the timber.
Barrister Ogana Lukpata, the chairman of the Committee, said the Task Force invaded the home of Awosa and allegedly made away with the sum of N2.5 million naira and three lorry loads of timber.
Lukpata called on the Task Force to return the money and the timber within seven days from the date of the resolution. But Jenkins said the lawmakers were looking for money and would “not get a dime from me.”
While contributing to the debate on the floor of the House earlier, the Deputy Speaker, Itaya Nyong said the task force was acting outside its mandate and called on Governor Imoke to ban the Task Force and hand over its function to the Cross River State Forestry Commission.
Senator Imoke is yet to respond to the call by the Assembly to stop the Task Force from operating.
Iran claims a recently discovered, centuries old bible will prove once and for all that Islam is the one true religion.
The bible, confiscated from smugglers by Turkish authorities in 2000 is believed to come from the fifth century and is made from animal hide.
Experts believe it may be a copy of the Gospel as written by Jesus’ disciple Barnabas, but Iranian state press claims it is much more than that.
Basij Press in Iran says the bible contains information that will trigger Christianity’s downfall, and prove Islam as the superior religion.
Basij Press has quoted this version of the bible as saying “God has hidden himself as Archangel Michael ran them (Adam and Eve) out of heaven, (and) when Adam turned, he noticed that at top of the gateway to heaven, it was written “La elah ela Allah, Mohamad rasool Allah,”‘ meaning Allah is the only God and Mohammad his prophet.
Iranian state press went on to report the bible saying that Jesus never died on the cross, and that he himself predicted Mohammed’s coming.
The book was found by authorities on 2000 during a crackdown on antiques smugglers, but excitement has recently been generated by claims The Vatican wants to get its hands on the book.
In February it was claimed The Vatican had made an official request to view the book, which is thought to still lie in a Turkish museum.
While most experts have rubbished Iran’s claims, the Islamic nation is adamant the book means the downfall of Christianity.
“The most significant fact, though, is that this Bible has predicted the coming of Prophet Mohammad and in itself has verified the religion of Islam,” state television claims.
Lady Gaga’s manager says the pop diva has no plans to tone down her act, even if that prevents her from performing in some countries on her Asian tour.
The Straits Times newspaper of Singapore reported on Friday that Troy Carter said Lady Gaga “plays the show as it is”, and that she is not “provocative for the sake of being provocative”.
Indonesian police denied a permit for her sold-out show in Jakarta after Islamic hard-liners threatened violence, saying her sexy clothes and dance moves could corrupt youth. They later hinted the planned June 3 show could go on if she tones down the show.
Lady Gaga delivered a cryptic message about the situation this week. She tweeted that if the show went on as scheduled she would perform alone.
A group of Nigeria watchers, including myself, has sent the secretary of state a letter urging that northeastern Nigeria’s “Boko Haram” not be given a foreign terrorist organization (FTO) designation.
Boko Haram is different from other FTOs, such as Hezbollah, Hamas, or the Tamil Tigers, which have an organizational structure and a unified goal. Boko Haram is a highly diffuse movement with little, if any, central organization. In fact, the name “Boko Haram” is a label applied only by the Nigerian government, press, and security services, usually to describe the violence occurring (daily) in the north of the country. Most watchers agree that this violence is perpetrated by a myriad of actors, including former followers of the murdered preacher Mohammed Yusuf as well as criminal and other elements.
The uniting feature of Boko Haram is its focus on Nigeria. Its rhetoric does not include international jihadist themes. With the isolated exception of the UN headquarters bombing in Abuja, which is viewed in Nigeria as a collaborator with the Nigerian government, its targets have all been Nigerian, usually police, military, places of worship, and drinking establishments. Notably, most of Boko Haram’s victims have been Muslim.
An FTO designation potentially discourages political solutions, which are needed most. Given the current animosity between the government and the north, third party intermediaries—such as Nigerian or international NGOS—are likely to be necessary. An FTO designation would inhibit their involvement.
The financial implications of designations could also impact on foreign remittances, which accounted for almost $10 billion in foreign exchange in 2009. In the words of our recently published letter, “thousands of Nigerian-Americans would face fear of prosecution for sending money home and, as a result, many transactions would be at best delayed or, worse, ended, compounding the suffering of their Nigerian families.”
Conversely, it may encourage the Nigerian government’s current, unsuccessful security-centric approach, which has included the arbitrary arrest and occasional killing of Nigerians, and progressively alienated the northern population.
FTO designation could also have the perverse consequences of enhancing the prestige of Boko Haram and promoting its consolidation. For example, it could lead to, in the minds of northern Nigerians, a closer association between Washington and Abuja, making the United States a legitimate target. It could also increase the incentives for globally focused terrorist groups to seek deeper linkages with groups in the North.
Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe on Thursday lashed out at the “selfish” West for denying Nigerian finance minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala the opportunity to head the World Bank.
Okonjo-Iweala, a respected economist, last month lost the World Bank president post to Korean-American Jim Young Kim, in a first-ever challenge to US domination of the job.
“We were very saddened that you didn’t make it,” Mugabe told a women’s conference in Harare, which the Nigerian minister was attending.
“You know the Europeans are very selfish, they want to retain power in these bodies.
“The World Bank, no African can head it. The IMF, no African can head it. So it will take us time to be equal,” said Mugabe.
Under a tacit agreement since the Bretton Woods institutions were founded nearly 70 years ago, the United States has always picked one of its citizens for the helm of the World Bank while Europe has held control of who leads the International Monetary Fund.
The US nominee faced a challenge for the first time in 66 years from two strong developing country candidates.
Okonjo-Iweala meanwhile said her candidacy for the World Bank president has proven that developing countries can lead global institutions.
“I think they (World Bank) have absolutely no choice, they have to evolve,” she said.
“It was a game changer that we cannot have the same processes that have gone on for 60 years going on in future; therefore I am confident that going forward there will be a more level playing field, more competition will be allowed.”
A truck driver, David Abiodun, 31, has been remanded in prison custody for allegedly obstructing the motorcade of Governor Babatunde Fashola on the Lekki-Epe Expressway.
While being arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court on a five-count charge of dangerous and reckless driving, the police alleged that Abiodun used his Mack truck to block an entire lane on the expressway for unjustifiable reasons and in the process prevented the Fashola and his convoy from having easy passage to their destination.
According to the police prosecutor, Clifford Ogu, the accused also could not produce his driver’s licence and the vehicle’s particulars when they were demanded. He added that the offences contravened Sections 28(i), 39(3) of the Traffic Act 548, 36 (P), 44 (1) Cap. 172, Vol. 7 of the Road Traffic Law of Lagos State of Nigeria and Section 126 (1) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Abiodun pleaded not guilty to the charge and Presiding Magistrate Famobiwo granted him bail in the sum of N20,000 with two sureties in like sum who must produce evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government and must also be resident in the state.
She adjourned the matter till 6 June, 2012 for mention.
The defendant was moved to Ikoyi Prison when he could not perfect his bail conditions.
