President Goodluck Jonathan is displeased with the quality and professionalism of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
He believes the nation’s military lack the quality of the best in the world.
President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday in Kaduna said that the welfare, equipment professionalism of the nation’s armed forces were not comparable to best international practice, declaring that the Nigerian Armed Forces were lagging behind among the comity of nations.
The President in his address as the Reviewing Officer at the passing-out parade and commissioning of the Direct Short Service Course 20 (Navy) at the the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna noted that it was based on the fact that the nation’s Armed Forces were not of international standard that his administration was working towards transforming the Armed Forces to meet the world best standard.
Jonathan, who was represented by the Vice-President, Namadi Sambo , enjoined the cadets to shun any act capable of jeopardising the peace and unity of the country.
The president said, “Let me at this juncture reiterate the high premium this administration places on the welfare of the members of the Armed Forces. As Commander-in-Chief, I have repeatedly assured members of the Armed Forces of my desire to transform the Armed Forces into a modern military institution that the nation can be proud of.
“The transformation will make it comparable to other Armed Forces in advanced world in terms of welfare, equipment, training and professionalism.
“The recent acquisition of NNS Tunder and approval for additional platforms are part of implementation process and practical demonstration of the commitment of this administration to restructuring of the Nigerian Navy,” he said.

US TYCOON Donald Trump will warn the Scottish Parliament this week that his plans to build a luxury hotel alongside his Aberdeenshire golf course will be axed if ministers back a series of “insane” wind turbines nearby.
The billionaire property developer will appear at Holyrood on Wednesday to attack the Scottish Government’s renewable energy proposals, accusing Alex Salmond of “destroying” the country’s natural heritage.
His championship golf course, ten miles north of Aberdeen, is scheduled to open as planned in July, but the entrepreneur’s senior representative said additional plans for a major hotel and housing development could not “co-exist” with an offshore wind farm planned for the coastal waters nearby.
George Sorial, vice president of The Trump Organisation, said: “If there is an industrial power plant on the shore line, the concept of having a luxury hotel and resort is simply incompatible. The two can’t co-exist.”
Sorial’s comments throw fresh doubt on the 500-hectare development, along with the job hopes of the thousands of workers which the Trump Organisation claims will be needed to build the entire project.
However, Trump was accused of “showbiz bluster” by environmental campaigners last night, as they produced a poll showing that 71 per cent of Scots back wind power as part of the country’s energy mix. The Scottish Government is committed to sourcing all of the country’s electricity needs from renewable sources by 2020. Trump’s dispute centres on plans to construct 11 new “next-generation” wind turbines, that will be clearly seen from his development.
The American billionaire will give evidence this week to Holyrood’s economy and energy committee. He is also expected to renew his attack on both Salmond and former first minister Lord McConnell, claiming he was given assurances that the windfarm development would not go ahead. Both Salmond and McConnell, who lost power at the 2007 Holyrood elections, deny any such guarantees.
Trump is expected to speak both inside and outside parliament on Wednesday as anti-wind farm protesters gather to rally against the Scottish Government’s plans to increase the number of turbines both on land and at sea. Trump has turned on Salmond over the push, claiming the move will do more damage “than any event in Scotland’s history”.
Both Salmond and McConnell have said the matter of the Aberdeenshire wind farm proposal, known as the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre, is now a matter for the planning authorities to decide. However, Sorial said that it was “disingenuous and ridiculous” for Salmond to claim he was not backing the wind farm programme off the north-east coast. “Everybody in Aberdeen knows that Alex Salmond is the driving force behind the EWDC application,” he said.
He added: “A lot of people won’t agree with us and a lot of people may feel uncomfortable agreeing with us but on this issue we were misled.
He went on: “It wasn’t until we built the course that the application went in. We knew the proposals were out there but we were always led to believe they wouldn’t get anywhere.”
Last month, Trump claimed he had been assured by McConnell there would be no wind turbines over-looking his course.
He said: “Jack McConnell and his administration said, ‘We really want you to spend your money in Scotland. We will not build the windmills.’ … I said: ‘Do I have your word?’ They said: ‘You have our word.’”
However, McConnell hit back last night. He said: “Mr Trump was treated with the same respect and courtesy that I and my government treated all potential inward investors. It is a pity that he doesn’t return that courtesy now.”
Meanwhile, Trump flew into the former Soviet republic of Georgia yesterday to expand his global real estate empire, lending his name to a glitzy tower on the Black Sea coast. Unveiling a $250 million (£155m) residential high-rise planned for the Georgian coastal resort town of Batumi, Trump said the country had become a prime destination for foreign investment.

The five civil servants undergoing criminal trial for the massive police pension fraud have been suspended indefinitely from their duties, the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC) announced on Thursday.
The officials, including a permanent secretary, a director and an assistant director, are accused of stealing N32.8 billion police pension money and have been charged to court on corruption charges by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The officers are Atiku Kigo (Permanent Secretary), Ahmed Wada (Director), John Yusuf (Assistant Director), Veronica Onyegbula (Cashier) and Sani Zira (ICT Officer).
The complex scheme, which involved several transfers of huge sums between banks, use of illegal accounts and falsification of names, is said to have been conducted between the officials and a former Director of Police Pension Fund, Esai Dangabar, who also has been charged.

Following the threats made by northern leaders yesterday about their readiness to break up, Afenifere Leader, Dr. Reuben Fasoranti, has cautioned the Northern leaders against their threat that the North is not afraid of the breaking of Nigeria.
A leader of the Arewa Elders Forum, Prof. Ango Abdulahi, on Wednesday said the North was prepared to go alone if the nation breaks up, adding that the North would not, however, champion the disintegration of the country.
Fasoranti told our correspondent in an interview in Akure that the news came to him as a shock.
He said, “I strongly appeal to the Northern leaders against such move because it would never be in their interest.
“They obviously don’t know the implication of such action and they should better don’t take a hasty decision they would forever live to regret.
“They would definitely benefit better if they remain in the same federation with the south because their own resources are limited.
“Their natural resources cannot possibly sustain them so they should not take any hasty decison because of the prevailing circumstance.”
The Arewa Consultant Forum, the umbrella body for the North, however, remained evasive regarding the position of Abdullahi, preferring to tacitly endorsing a united Nigeria.
ACF National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Anthony Sani, said on Thursday. “Professor Ango Abdullahi merely echoed what has been said several times that the North is committed to a united Nigeria in diversity not out of fear that the region cannot exist without oil but because of our deep and wide interdependence among constituent parts that make divorce impossible.
“Moreover, the size of the country is a huge advantage not just now but in future when the economy picks up. As result, the North would not be the cause of any contemplated break up.”
Ohanaeze Ndigbo dismissed Abdullahi’s threat, describing his submission as pointless.
The Deputy President General of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Chief Gary Igariwey, said, “We cannot react to such threats. Anybody could come from anywhere to make threats of breakup or secession, so it’s pointless reacting to such.”
He added, “There are so many groups now seeking attention, but there are those we recognise, like the Arewa Consultative Forum.
“Even if it comes from the Arewa Consultative Forum, it must come from the right people in the group, not just anybody.”
Coordinator of the Federation of Middle Belt Peoples, Mr. Manasseh Watyil, distanced the zone from the position of the Northern leaders.
Watyil said, “Who are the Northerners? We better distinguish between the owners of the North. If they want Nigeria to break that mean they are going back to where they came from. That will not affect the Middle Belt; they are free to go.
He added, “It is because of these challenges that the Middle Belt is calling for true federalism or Sovereign National Conference if we will stay together.”
A member of the Ulam council in Plateau State, Mallam Sani Muazu, however lamented the penchant for people or group to claim that they were speaking for the North.
He said there was nothing called one monolithic North, adding that there were no issues that could warrant any breakup of the country. Muazu said what united the country was more than what could divide it.

Detectives at the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Panti, Yaba, Lagos, are currently trying to arrest the culprit behind the alleged raping of a 20-month old pupil of a school at Egbeda, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.
A doctor’s report confirming penetration of the girl’s private part has been submitted to the police by parents of the pupil to aid their investigation.
A close examination of the girl’s private part, as shown in a picture taken by the parents, revealed blood in it, suggesting that she must have been violated. But what is not clear is who actually carried out the dastardly act.
According to the parents of the victim, the girl was violated inside the school before the close of work on 16 February, 2012.
According to the victim’s mother, “I took my child to the school that fateful day and at the close of school, I went there to pick her but I noticed that she was walking awkwardly. I drew her Aunty’s (teacher) attention to this and she assured me that there was nothing wrong. My little girl was constantly pointing to her vagina. So, I lifted up her uniform and discovered that her pant had been removed. I also examined her vagina and discovered blood there.
“When I demanded explanation, her teacher told me that she also observed blood coming out of her vagina and that she removed her pant and washed it. I learnt that they took my child to the school nurse who, after a close examination, explained that the child must have contracted a disease in the toilet and that there was nothing to worry about.
“The matter was reported to the school proprietor, Mr. Uzoigwe and his wife, Mrs. Uzoigwe who also attributed the child’s condition to an infection from the toilet.
“I was shocked by this discovery and I phoned my husband, a naval personnel. On his arrival, we took the girl to Estate Clinic where she was examined by a doctor who confirmed that the girl had been violated. He referred us to the General Hospital, Igando. There, the doctor who examined her also confirmed that the girl had been violated. He advised us to go for AIDS test.
“After these confirmations we reported the matter to the police at Mosalasi and the proprietor and his wife were arrested. Also arrested were the class teacher, head teacher, cleaner and the gateman. They were asked to write a statement on what they knew about the incident. They were released on the second day after being granted bail.”
After investigation by policemen at Mosalasi Station, the matter was transferred to the SCID, Panti where the accused persons were also made to say all they knew about the incident.
A police source at the SCID revealed that the police had forwarded the case file of the incident to the Director of Public Prosecution for advice.
Attempt to confirm this at the DPP’s office at Alausa was unsuccessful as an official there refused to confirm whether or not they had received the case file.
When contacted on phone, the wife of the proprietor of the school, Mrs. Uzoigwe denied that the girl was raped in the school.
“God forbid. None of my staff raped any girl. The matter is now with the police at the SCID. If you want any information, you can contact the SCID. I have made a statement to the police and that is all I can say for the time being. If you want any information, contact the police. Everything you want to know about the matter is with them,” she said .
A doctor at the Estate Clinic, Egbeda, who examined the little girl, confirmed that he saw blood in her private part when he examined her, adding that he had forwarded his report to the SCID for further investigation.
The general investigating officer at the SCID, Panti, described the situation as pathetic.
He assured that the police will get to the root of the matter.
