The United Kingdom is warning citizens living in or travelling to Nigeria to remain vigilante as “there is a high threat of terrorist attack during religious festivals” such as the upcoming Easter holiday.
In an updated travel advisory published online Thursday, the Foreign Office urged citizens to “exercise particular vigilance and caution” during the religious holiday as radical sect Boko Haram has been known to strike on religious holidays, including the series of attacks on Christmas Day last year that claimed over 40 lives.
“Attacks could be indiscriminate, including government and security institutions, international organisations as well as public areas such as markets, hotels, shopping centres, places of worship and other areas frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers.”
Major cities in the north, including Kano and Maiduguri have reportedly shored up security measures to protect against possible attacks, even as the Nigerian army issued a warning this week of a possible terrorist attack in Kano.
The warning was released on Wednesday after Army spokesman, Lt. Ikedichi Iweha, confirmed the arrest of three suspected Boko Haram members who had allegedly killed a soldier at a checkpoint in Kano.
In a new interview with Bloomberg Businessweek’s Brad Stone, Google co-founder and CEO Larry Page revealed how the web giant is doing now, what lies ahead, and how it’s faring with its competitors one year after he stepped in to take former CEO Eric Schmidt’s place. In addition, Page shed a little light on his relationship with his mentor and Apple’s late co-founder and CEO, Steve Jobs. According to recent reports, Jobs didn’t seem to be a very big fan of Google’s. In a section of Walter Isaacson’s popular biography on the Jobs’ life, Jobs explains his fury following the launch of Google’s Android operating system.
Speaking to Isaacson, the Apple co-founder said he was “willing to go thermonuclear war” on Google and briefly laid out his company’s retaliation plan: Our lawsuit is saying, “Google you f***ing ripped off the iPhone, wholesale ripped us off.” Grand theft. I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple’s $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong. I’m going to destroy Android, because it’s a stolen product.” Larry Page, however, has a different take on this now-famous outburst. He spoke with Bloomberg of his talks with Jobs and reflected fondly on the advice Jobs gave him about running a company.

In his first three months on the job, the new Yahoo chief executive officer, CEO Scott Thompson has imposed the largest layoffs in the company’s 17-year history and reshaped the board of directors.
Thompson delivered on Wednesday, a payroll purge of about 2,000 workers, or about 14 percent of Yahoo’s 14,100 employees. The cuts will save about $375 million annually as Yahoo tries to boost its earnings and long-slumping stock price.
Thompson is Yahoo’s fourth full-time CEO in less than five years — a period marked by steady declines in revenue, even though more advertising has been shifting to the Internet.
Colombia said on Thursday it does not see the candidacy of former finance minister Jose Antonio Ocampo to head the World Bank as viable, throwing into question whether he will be nominated for the post as a Friday deadline loomed.
Brazil and South Africa are keen to tap Ocampo and Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as candidates to lead the World Bank, sources told Reuters on Wednesday, the first concerted challenge to the U.S. grip on the multilateral lending agency’s top job.
South Africa called a news conference for Friday at which it will announce Okonjo-Iweala’s candidacy for the World Bank’s top job. Nominations for the World Bank presidency close at 6 p.m. EST (2200 GMT)
But Colombian Finance Minister Juan Carlos Echeverry said Ocampo stood little chance of winning the post because another Colombian already heads the Washington-based Inter-American Development Bank.
He said the Andean nation was focused on a bid at the International Labor Organization.
“The candidacy of (Colombia’s Vice President) Angelino Garzon for the president of the International Labor Organization has a high probability of success,” Echeverry told reporters.
“The Colombian government has to concentrate exclusively on a candidate that has possibilities of success, and so we should concentrate on the candidacy of the vice president,” he added.
So it’s effectively a two man race.
A police officer, Mr. Oluwole Alagbe, yesterday told a Coroner court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, that the late Ademola Aderinto, killed during the fuel subsidy protest in Agege area of Lagos early this year, was cut down by police stray bullet.
Alagbe, the Investigating Police Officer, IPO, in the killing told Magistrate Tajudeen Elias, the Chief Coroner, that the gun that killed the deceased went off when some hoodlums were struggling for a rifle carried by the suspect.
The IPO, who gave insight into the statement of the DPO of Pen Cinema Police Station, Mr. Olusegun Fabunmi, alleged to have shot and killed the late Aderinto at Yaya Abatan Street, Ogba, said the DPO wrote in his statement that he received a distressed call from the control room that some hoodlums were attacking innocent people in the area and dispossessing them of their valuables.
Problems with witnesses
Meanwhile, an interested party in the matter, a Director of Access for Justice, Mr. Leonard Dibia and the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Ikeja, Vice-Chairman, Mr. Yinka Farounbi, had told the court that they were having problem bringing witnesses to court because the immediate family of the deceased resides outside Lagos.
Farounbi noted that some elders of the Yaya Abatan community had on Tuesday assured them that those who witnessed the shooting would appear at the next adjourned date.
Led in evidence by the Officer-in-Charge, of Legal, the witness told the court that the gun that killed the deceased went off when some hoodlums were struggling for a rifle carried by the suspect.
Unidentified gunmen in two Hummer Jeeps have shot and killed four policemen in Oraifite community in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State, Southeast Nigeria.
The four policemen were on routine patrol in the area on Monday night when the incident happened.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) learnt that an inspector and eight other policemen had gone on routine duty at Emeka Offor Junction in the area at night when the gunmen opened fire on them.
An eye witness account said that some unidentified bandits operating in two Hummer Jeeps opened fire and killed four the policemen.
Confirming the incident, Mr Emeka Chukwuemeka, the Anambra Police Command spokesman, said three policemen were killed by the robbers.
He said that men of the command had swung into action to track down the fleeing hoodlums, adding that “we are making progress in catching up with the robbers.
“It is possible that the robbers sustained injuries because there was a serious gun battle between our men and the robbers but because nobody was seen from their side, people concluded that the police did not challenge the robbers,” Chukwuemeka said.
A top security source in Abuja has confirmed to SaharaReporters that Boko Haram mujahedeens are planning suicide bomb attacks at Kaduna Refinery, and Defense Industrial Corporation of Nigeria (DICON).
DICON manufactures light weapons for the Nigerian Army and other para-military agencies.
According to the source, anintelligence report is indicating that averting major attacks by Boko Haram will depend on how security agencies continue to collaborate and kept close watch on the group in Kaduna State.
The source added that they have also been monitoring several movements of some Boko Haram operatives, which he said have been coming in and out of Kaduna, and have recruited hundreds in the town aside those that have relocated to Kaduna.
He explained that the sect has an armory in Kaduna from where they made the IEDs that exploded in a suicide bomb attack on Sunday.
