There are indications that Nigerian military special forces have made considerable advances on elements of the Boko Haram Islamic sect operating around Gwoza Hill in Borno.

Reports say the military have intensified its campaign to neutralise the insurgents around the north-eastern part of the country killing 70 and arresting a top leader of the dreaded sect.

The leader was said to have been arrested on Thursday night while making attempts to flee the captured Gwoza Hills camp of the insurgents with black Toyota Land Cruiser jeep in his escort.

He was subsequently flown Abuja for further interrogation.

The captured leader is suspected to be a high-ranking member of the sect  according to sources.

Security officials were of the view that the captured Boko Haram leader might be a very key person to the operation of the sect for him to have such a massive and luxurious escort comprising Toyota Land Cruiser vehicles.

Investigations further revealed that troops killed over 70 insurgents at Bita community in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State and Bama headquarters of Bama Local Government Area of Borno State.

The insurgents were said to have been killed in two different gun duels with troops at Bita and Bama where Armoured Personnel Carriers and military tanks were fully deployed on Thursday.

The Director of Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade has pleaded for more time in confirming the news of the capture. He, however, confirmed the deployment of Armoured Personnel Carriers and more military equipment to the affected areas.
