Insurgents suspected to be members of Boko Haram, have attacked two towns, Bajoga and Ashaka, in Gombe state, where they raided banks and burnt government buildings and political party offices.

Scores of gunmen dressed in camouflage arrived in Bagega some 60 kilometres (37 miles) from Gombe city in a convoy of 20 vehicles at about 7 am.

The troops stationed there engaged them and were able to push them out, after which they drove to the town of Ashaka five kilometres away near the border with Yobe state to the northeast, where they supposedly looted the Ashaka cement plant for the secone time in weeks.

Gombe State Police Commissioner, Kudu Nma, confirmed the attack on Bajoga town in Funakaye Local Government Area of Gombe State.

He said that the gunmen arrived the town in six hilux vans and started shooting sporadically in the air, as residents ran for their lives.

Meanwhile, a resident of Bajoga, revealed that two fighter jets were hovering over the town, while ground troops were engaged in a firefight with the insurgents.
