Bomb scare: London’s Luton Airport terminal evacuated

by Isi Esene

There was anxiety today at United Kingdom’s sixth biggest airport as passengers were evacuated after a suspicious item was found in the security search area.

Airport officials immediately explained  the decision on its website saying it was to ensure the safety and security of passengers and staff.

“London Luton Airport has evacuated the terminal building after a suspicious item was found in the security search area. The decision has been taken with the police to ensure the safety and security of passengers and staff,” Luton Airport said on their website.

According to Bedfordshire Police, the departure lounge at the airport has also been cleared.

Luton airport primarily serves holidays destinations.

Latest reports, however, indicate that the package has been destroyed in a controlled explosion and the airport reopened shortly after.

Officers said the item was destroyed and “although deemed suspicious, did not present a wider danger”.

Britain recently raised its international terrorism alert to its second-highest level, saying Islamic State (IS) in Syria and Iraq posed the country’s greatest-ever security risk.
