‘Borno is now free’ – Governor Shettima

Governor of Borno, Kashim Shettima has declared that his state is finally free of the terror-reign of Boko Haram insurgents.

Shettima said on Monday, that ‘Borno is now free’ but however, admitted that occasional attacks are still being perpetrated by the terrorists.

The governor stated this on Monday while on a visit to the Director General of National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Muhammad Sidi, in Abuja.

Shettima said: “10 months ago, one could not travel for 10 kilometres without encountering terrorists.”

“Yes, we still have occasional hiccups, but Boko Haram has been so decimated that they can no longer threaten the corporate existence of Nigeria.”

The governor noted that peace was gradually returning to the state, while stating that by the end of 2015, all internally displaced persons, IDPs, would have returned to their homes.

He added that Borno state is home to 90 percent of IDPs in the country – noting that out of 2.5 million IDPs in Nigeria, Maiduguri is host to 1.7 million, while there are nearly 200,000 IDPs in the state.
