Borno trains 1,000 IDPs how to defend themselves against rapists

The Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), on Friday said training of about 1, 000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) on self defence against rape has commenced.

This was stated by the Chairman of the agency, Satomi Ahmed in an interview with newsmen in Maiduguri.

Ahmed said the training was necessary as IDPs would soon be taken back to their various communities and need to know how to defend themselves in case of any attack.

“After the training, the beneficiaries would serve as ambassadors of the fight against domestic violence and sexual abuse in their various communities.”

Ahmed added that the training also focused on safe motherhood, reproductive health, sexual violence among others.

“At the end of the training, the women would be equipped with the relevant skills on how they can protect themselves against any accidental circumstances.

“The training will give the women the opportunity to assist other women on complications that may arise especially during child birth.

”This sensitisation is also designed to further build confidence in them to enable them return back to their homes without any fear,” Ahmed said.
