A new video showing the missing school girls who were abducted from Chibok, Borno state on April 14 was released few hours ago with the Boko Haram sect. leader, Abubakar Shekau relaying a new message to the Federal Government.
From the video, we gathered that:
1. Shekau claims that all the 234 abducted girls have been converted to Islam
2. Chibok has a sizeable Christian community, which means majority of the captured girls are Christians.
3. In the 1-minute video showing the ‘abducted girls’, they were dressed fully in the clothing of a female muslim – a scarf and a grey hijab, showing just their faces and the rest of their bodies fully covered.
4. They were seated on a cleared ground surrounded by trees and grasses with some girls holding up a sign written in Arabic in an undisclosed location, reciting some muslim prayers (the Sūrat al-Fātiḥah) some raised their heads while others tried to bow theirs after which one of the girls stands up and says something like a prayer, almost incoherent.
5. The video which was obtained by the French news agency AFP, showed over a 100 girls in the 17-minute video.
6. Shekau was said he has liberated the girls by converting them to Muslims. Speaking to the camera and holding a piece of paper in his hands, he said,“These girls, these girls you occupy yourselves with their affair we have indeed ‘liberated’ them. We have indeed ‘liberated’ them.
7. The Boko Haram leader said he would only free the girls in exchange for the Islamic militants in detention.
8. After the video was revealed, the special adviser on Media and Publicity to President Goodluck Jonathan, Reuben Abati was quoted saying: “The government of Nigeria has no intention to pay a ransom or to buy the girls, because the sale of human beings is a crime against humanity, the determination of the government is to get the girls and to ensure that the impunity that has brought this about is checked and punished.”
9. There is no indication on where and when the video was taken by the Boko Haram leader.
