Buhari has not sacked NNPC boss, Ibe Kachikwu

Contrary to widespread reports, President Muhammadu Buhari has not axed Dr Ibe Kachikwu from his role as the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

Unconfirmed reports inferred on Thursday, that Kachikwu had been replaced with Maikanti Baru – a Group Executive Director of the corporation.

However, Premium Times reached out to a member of the management of the NNPC, who described the reports as ‘completely false’.

The Group General Manager, Public Affairs Division of the NNPC, Garba-deen Mohammed, was quoted to have said: “The story is completely false. It should be ignored by all Nigerians.”

“The minister is currently in his office and has continued to function in the roles assigned to him by the president.”

The Trade Union Congress (TUC), had on Tuesday, April 19, called on President Muhammadu Buhari to handover to someone else as Minister of Petroleum.

Speaking on behalf of the TUC, President of the Union, Comrade Bobboi Bala Kaigama, also advised the President to appoint a separate individual to take charge of the NNPC while Kachkwu focuses solely on his role as Minister of State for Petroleum.

“There is cogent need for appointment of a substantive Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources. The ideal candidate for this should be someone who has the necessary knowledge, experience and competence, and who would directly oversee the affairs of the ministry and report regularly to the President.”

“That position is too critically important to the economy to be subsumed as one of the many offices or portfolios of the President and Commander-in-Chief. Of course the position of Minister of State for Petroleum and Mineral Resources should continue to exist as a junior minister in the ministry. A separate Group Managing Director (GMD) of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) should also be appointed to directly supervise the affairs of the NNPC.”
