Why ‘it makes sense’ for Buhari to be Petroleum Minister – Oshiomhole

Edo state governor, Adams Oshiomhole, has said President Muhammadu Buhari, is justified in appointing himself as Petroleum Minister.

Oshiomhole said so many things had gone wrong with the ministry and the Nigerian National Petroleum Commission (NNPC), hence, ‘it makes sense for the President to take charge’.

In an interview with Punch, the governor said Buhari’s supervision of the ministry would ensure transparency and accountability.

“When things are tough, Nigerians often say ‘let this particular agency come directly under the supervision of the President.’

When you recognise that too many things went wrong with the Nigerian National Petroleum Commission and that oil remains the main stay of our economy for now and perhaps for the foreseeable future, it makes sense for the President to say that he would take charge of it. He has not broken new grounds; a President before him has done that.”

“I think what should bother Nigerians is ensuring that the NNPC breaks from the past, that it is now being managed efficiently and that it subjects itself to international best practices in corporate governance and so on.

Nigerians should also know that the President’s supervision of this sector leads to greater transparency, greater efficiency and greater confidence in the Nigerian oil sector. I think that’s what matters. But sometimes, Nigerians like to trivialise issues.”
