Senate Chief Whip confirms Standing Order was altered (WATCH)

The Chief Whip of the Senate, Olusola Adeyeye has confirmed that the senate standing rules were altered – the reason the senate president, Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu are currently facing a forgery charge at a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Adeyeye was a senator in the 7th senate before he was re-elected to represent his constituency in the 8th senate.

The Senator, while speaking on Channels TV, said he is aware the senate order currently in use by the 8th senate, is different from the one used by the 7th senate.

He however, stopped short of stating that the current senate order was forged.

He said, “I don’t know how to answer that and the reason is this. I am a member of the current senate. I am a principle officer of the current senate. The rules that we have now are different from the one we had in the 7th National Assembly. There is no question about that. Let the court decide whether it was forged or not. The senate rule was altered. Nobody can deny that.”

“The main alteration in the senate order is that in the 7th National Assembly, voting had to be done publicly. In this current one, it was done privately. There are other things. I don’t want to get into it because the case is in court. It is not fair for me to do that.”

Adeyeye also said it would be almost impossible to remove Saraki as the Senate President seeing that he has the advantage of numbers on his side.

“If politics is a game of number, Saraki has the number in the Nigerian Senate (and) let nobody deceive himself.”

“In the current situation, it is impossible because a majority is not enough to remove him (and) by the rules of the Senate, you need 2/3 to remove a presiding officer.”

“That number will not come,” he stated.
