The Church Blog: Have you noticed something about the wives of Lagos State governors?

Has it occurred to you? Over 65-percent of the governors of Lagos since democracy’s return in 1999 have been Muslim, and yet they have enjoyed a very warm mutual-admiration relationship with the Christian communities in Lagos, especially the Pentecostal community.

Bola Tinubu (1999 – 2007) is Muslim.
Babatunde Fashola (2007 – 2015) is Muslim.
Akinwunmi Ambode (2015 – TBD) is Christian however.

But the warm relationship with the church has continued.

Part of the reason, if not the singular most important reason, for the warmth has to be their wives. Oluremi Tinubu was fastidious about cultivating Christian relationships – building strong rapport with Pastor Enoch Adeboye amongst others.

Abimbola Fashola (a Dame no less) extended that a lot further – building multiple relationships (a perfect counter-balance to her aloof husband) by attending a variety of church services and events, and supporting gospel acts and artistes, from Daystar to RCCG to House on the Rock.

But it is Bolanle Ambode that has truly elevated it into art, very active in the upper echelons of the RCCG, including hosting the annual ARISE Women’s Conference of the City of David.

Just a random interesting factoid. It won’t change the price of garri in the market.

But add all of that to the active service of Dolapo Osinbajo in the church – and you have an idea about how influential the women from Lagos in the Buhari government are in the Nigerian church.
