Chunk of change: Court grants Gov Sylva N100 million bail

by Stanley Azuakola

After surrendering himself to EFCC yesterday, the former governor of Bayelsa State, Timipreye Sylva has been granted bail in the sum of N100 million (with a guarantor who must own a landed property within the FCT) today at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The guarantor is expected to deposit his documents for the landed property with the Chief Registrar of the Court.

As part of the bail conditions,  Governor Sylva is required to deposit all his travelling documents with the court in order to prevent him from leaving the country without the permission of the court.

Counsel to Sylva, Lateef Fagbemi and Counsel to the EFCC, Festus Keyamo were both satisfied with the conditions of the bail.

The former Bayelsa State governor is standing trial for allegedly embezzling the sum of N4.45 billion from the state’s government treasury while he was in office.
