Court rules against moves to stop Saraki

A federal high court in Abuja has rejected a petition by five senators opposed to Bukola Saraki to stop the upper legislative chamber from constituting its standing and ad hoc committees.

The five senators are Abu Ibrahim, Kabir Marafa, Ajayi Boroffice, Olugbenga Ashafa and Suleiman Hunkuni.

But Justice Gabriel Kolawole dismissed the application, holding that the urgency attached to it was self-induced.

Kolawole said this was because the plaintiffs had been aware of the alleged use of the illegitimate standing orders since June 9, 2015 but only chose to file the application dated on July 27, which was barely 24 hours to the Senate’s resumption.

“In the light of the above analysis, I will be unable to grant the ex parte application dated July 24 and only filed on July 27, 2015 by only five out of the 109 senators constitutionally elected to the upper legislative chamber,”  Kolawole ruled.

The case was adjourned to August 5.
