Ailing Metuh begs to seek medical attention abroad

The Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed Wednesday, tomorrow to rule on former publicity secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Olisa Metuh’s application to have his confiscated passport released so he can travel to the United Kingdom for medical attention.

Olisa Metuh is in court for allegedly receiving N400 million from the office of the National Security Adviser during the previous administration of Goodluck Jonathan after being charged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Metuh, who’s health has continued to deteriorate, filed an application to be given his passport back so that he can seek medical help abroad for 5 weeks but counsel to the EFCC, Sylvanus Tahir strongly objected before the court.

Tahir said Metuh has not placed any material before the court to allow the granting of such application adding that the medical report that came with the application is not certified.

Tahir also said that there are hospitals that can treat Metuh’s ailment in the country and he only wanted to travel as a matter of preference not necessity.

Metuh filed his application on May 16, requesting the  court’s registrar to release his passport to him and to permit him to travel to the United Kingdom for five weeks to get treatment.

While the defence argued that the court had jurisdiction to “vary” its order earlier seizing Metuh’s passport, the EFCC lawyer, Tahir, countered that since the defence failed to specifically  ask for the variation of the bail conditions, the court could not grant his request.

The trial would continue today but the ruling on the application would be given by Justice Okon Abang tomorrow.
